Ford Mustang Mach-E or Hyundai Ioniq 5: which should you buy?

Buy the Ford Mustang Mach-E for character and pace: it out-powers the Ioniq 5, adds heated seats and a panoramic roof as standard, and backs the Mustang badge with real power and presence. Buy the Hyundai Ioniq 5 for faster charging, more entry-level range, a bigger boot and lower running costs, the more practical electric SUV.

525Nm

THE MUSTANG'S GRUNT

The badge cashes out in torque: the base Ford Mustang Mach-E Select makes 525Nm to the Hyundai Ioniq 5 base's 350Nm, 175Nm more shove for the driver who came for the Mustang name.

Ford Mustang Mach-E vs Hyundai Ioniq 5: design

Ford

The Mach-E leads with a closed-off, Mustang-inspired nose, a long bonnet, slim lights and the pony badge front and centre, chasing muscle-car presence in an SUV shape. It is the more aggressive face of the two, styled to signal performance before practicality. Whether the Mustang name belongs on a five-door EV is a debate, but the front end commits to it with conviction.

Hyundai

The Ioniq 5 meets it with Hyundai's pixel-block lighting and a flat, upright face that still looks like little else on the road. Where the Ford chases attitude, the Hyundai chases geometry, clean surfaces and 1980s-referencing angles that have aged into a genuine design signature. The tall nose is also functional, feeding the airy, glassy cabin behind it.

The verdict

Which is better: the Ford Mustang Mach-E or the Hyundai Ioniq 5?

Pick the Mustang Mach-E if

You want an EV with attitude and real shove, not just efficiency. The Mach-E gives you 212kW and 525Nm from the base Select, a 434kW GT above it, and Mustang styling that stands out in a sea of sensible SUVs, then loads the entry car with heated seats, a heated wheel and a panoramic roof. The catch is the sensible stuff: it charges slower, the base range trails, the boot is smaller and it costs more to buy and service.

Pick the Ioniq 5 if

You want the electric SUV that just works better day to day. The Ioniq 5 charges 10 to 80 per cent in about 18 minutes on 800 volts, claims 570km of range, packs a 520-litre boot and a roomy flat-floored cabin, and costs less to buy on its current offer and less to run. The trade is character and pace: it makes less power than the Mach-E, and heated seats and a head-up display wait until the Elite.
