Tank 300
Rexton

From$47,990
From$46,990
The Rexton wins for families and towers: it is the only seven-seater here, pulls 3,500kg and carries more, on a sharp driveaway price. The Tank 300 is the pick for off-road capability, a current five-star ANCAP rating and powertrain choice, including a plug-in hybrid, in a five-seat body.
7 seats
The Rexton seats seven across three rows; the Tank 300 is a five-seater. For a family that needs the third row, only the Rexton answers the brief, while the Tank 300 trades seats for off-road focus.
Pick a priority — we’ll show the numbers that matter and tell you which car we’d choose.

25° (leads) | Departure | 20.5° |
This is the Tank 300's home ground. It leads on every published angle, 29 degrees approach to the Rexton's 20.5, with 224mm of clearance to 203mm and 800mm of wading depth, and it adds terrain modes, crawl control and a front diff lock on the Ultra grades. The Rexton has low range, a rear locker and hill-descent control, enough for trails and touring, but the GWM is the one built to climb.
Based on Off-road, we’d pick the GWM Tank 300.

The Rexton is the better tow car. It pulls 3,500kg braked to the Tank 300's 3,000kg, and it carries more while doing it: 824kg of payload and a 6,460kg combination mass against 600kg and 5,580kg at the anchor grades. That headroom is what lets you tow heavy and still load people and gear. The Tank 300's upper grades close the gap, so match the specific variant to your load.
Based on Towing & weights, we’d pick the KGM Rexton.

480 Nm (leads) | Torque | 441 Nm |
7.8 L/100km (leads) | Fuel economy | 8.7 L/100km |
The Tank 300 wins on breadth. Its range runs petrol, diesel and a 300kW, 750Nm Hi4-T plug-in hybrid, so you can have a torque-rich, near-silent crawler or a frugal tourer under one badge. The Rexton counters with a single strong 2.2-litre diesel, 148kW and 441Nm, that reviewers rate as quiet and relaxed rather than fast. On outputs the diesels are close; on choice, the GWM is in a different league.
Based on Engine & efficiency, we’d pick the GWM Tank 300.

This one is close. Both back the car with a seven-year, unlimited-kilometre warranty. The Rexton is the cheaper buy on a sharp run-out driveaway price worth confirming, and the cheaper car to service. The Tank 300 fits more standard kit at the base grade, adds two extra years of roadside cover and brings a safety rating the Rexton lacks. Pick on priorities: metal and seats, or kit and peace of mind.
A genuine tie.

The Tank 300 carries a current five-star ANCAP rating from 2022 with strong adult and child sub-scores, and standard autonomous emergency braking (AEB), lane keep assist, adaptive cruise control and blind-spot monitoring. This generation of Rexton has never been rated, despite fitting nine airbags and the same active-safety kit. More airbags do not replace an independent crash result, so the GWM holds the safety edge on the measure that counts, with its intrusive assist the asterisk.
Based on Safety, we’d pick the GWM Tank 300.

5 | Seats | 7 (leads) |
400 L (leads) | Boot | 236 L |
12.0″ | Touchscreen | 12.3″ (leads) |
The Rexton is the family pick on practicality. It is the only seven-seater here, with more interior room, nine airbags and a bigger folded boot. The catches are real: no ANCAP rating for this generation and no child-seat anchors in the third row, so the rearmost seats suit older kids. The Tank 300 is a safer-rated five-seater that cannot carry six, so for larger families the Rexton's seat count settles it.
Based on Everyday & family, we’d pick the KGM Rexton.
The Tank 300 wears its intent on its face: upright, boxy and unmistakably retro-rugged, with round LED headlights, a slab bonnet and squared wheel arches that nod to the old Land Cruiser and Defender school. Short overhangs and a high stance back up the off-road numbers. It is the more characterful and more photographed of the two, and it looks every bit the compact 4x4 it is.
The Rexton takes a quieter, more conventional large-SUV approach up front: a broad grille, slim LED headlights and a clean, upright nose from the MY26 redesign. It looks like what it is, a big, honest family wagon rather than a lifestyle statement, and the longer bonnet and bluffer face read more road-biased than rock-ready. Understated beside the GWM, but few will mind at the price.

The Tank 300 is GWM's boxy, ladder-frame off-roader, and it undercuts a Toyota Prado or Ford Everest while giving up very little of the hardware that matters off the blacktop.
The Rexton is the value play in the body-on-frame seven-seat diesel segment, a ladder-frame wagon that tows 3,500kg and seats seven for a clear step under Prado or Everest money.

Opinions are our own.
Off-road capability matters more to you than a third row. You want a five-star ANCAP rating rather than an untested car. Powertrain choice appeals, especially the 300kW plug-in hybrid. You value standard kit at the base grade and longer roadside cover. And you can live with five seats, a snug cabin and driver-assist you will switch off most drives, in exchange for the hardware and the safety credential.
Explore the Tank 300You need seven seats, full stop. You tow a caravan or boat and want the 3,500kg rating with payload to spare. The sharp driveaway price and seven-year warranty do the talking for you. You will climb to the Ultimate for the nicer kit, and you can accept that this generation has no ANCAP rating, no third-row child anchors, and a successor already on the horizon.
