Last updated August 2026
The GWM Tank 500 is our pick when the budget reaches it: a current five-star ANCAP rating, 255kW of hybrid muscle, triple diff locks and luxury kit the LDV D90 never offers. The D90 is the choice when the budget is the brief: seven seats and a 3,000kg tow rating for $36,816 less.
$36,816
The LDV D90 opens at $39,174 driveaway to the GWM Tank 500's $75,990 as of August 2026. Same seven seats, same 3,000kg tow rating, close to half the price.

One current certificate on the page: the Tank 500's five-star ANCAP rating, with 93 per cent child occupant protection leading its pillars. The D90 carries no current rating and leans on its assist list, which covers AEB through blind-spot monitoring but misses the tested file. The theme is the GWM's without much argument.
Based on Safety, we’d pick the GWM Tank 500.

Hybrid against turbo petrol: 255kW and 648Nm in the Tank Vanta, 300kW and 750Nm in the plug-in Ultra, against the D90's 184kW and 410Nm. The LDV's eight-speed is smooth company for family duties, but the GWM out-muscles it by 71kW at minimum and claims better economy doing it. Clear win to the Tank.
Based on Performance, we’d pick the GWM Tank 500.

The Tank 500's cabin punches above its badge: a 14.6-inch touchscreen over a 12-inch cluster, head-up display, 360-degree camera and built-in navigation. The D90 answers with matching 12.3-inch twin screens and wireless smartphone mirroring, the essentials done cleanly at half the money. Outright kit belongs to the GWM.

Both seat seven. The D90 stretches the longer 2,950mm wheelbase and the boxier, space-first body; the Tank 500 wraps its rows in the tested five-star file, rear climate control, ventilated seats and a 360-degree camera. Space-per-dollar to the LDV; the equipped, certificated family cabin to the GWM, and the theme with it.

Structural mismatch: every Tank 500 carries low range, front, centre and rear lockers, crawl control and 800mm of wading; the D90 offers part-time 4WD only on the Executive 4WD grade, wades 550mm, and fits no lockers at any price. The LDV's 246mm of clearance and matching departure angle keep it honest on tracks. Hardware decides it for the GWM.
Based on Off-road, we’d pick the GWM Tank 500.
Pick a priority above to see how the GWM Tank 500 and LDV D90 stack up on what matters to you.
The Tank 500's chrome-heavy, upright face borrows unashamedly from full-size luxury off-roaders, 1,934mm wide and 1,905mm tall, with a 30-degree approach angle under the jewellery.
The D90 keeps it simple: a broad 2,016mm body, the widest on the page, under a plain SUV face with a 29-degree approach angle. Nothing about it advertises; the price does the talking.

The Tank 500 is the ambitious end of the Chinese ladder-frame push.
The D90's case is arithmetic nobody else can match.

Opinions are our own.
The brief is maximum capability and kit from the Chinese ladder-frame class. Triple lockers, low range, 800mm of wading, a current five-star ANCAP file and a hybrid drivetrain from 255kW, wrapped in a cabin with a head-up display and ventilated seats. Pick the Vanta for the value entry; the Ultra PHEV for 300kW and plug-in economy. Best for tourers, towers and equipment maximisers.
Explore the Tank 500Seven seats and a 3,000kg tow rating need to happen for the least money in the country. $39,174 driveaway on LDV's advertised August 2026 pricing buys the Mode; $47,068 buys the Executive 4WD with a transfer case for touring intent. The seven-year warranty runs to 200,000km. Best for budget families, ABN buyers and anyone whose spreadsheet is the decision-maker.
