Pick the Volkswagen ID.4 for value: it is the same electric SUV as the ID.5, roomier over tall heads and about three thousand dollars cheaper at the entry Pro grade. Choose the ID.5 only if its fastback styling wins you over, because you give up almost nothing practical to get the look.
549L
Fastback styling usually costs an SUV its boot, yet the Volkswagen ID.5 holds 549 litres with the seats up, six more than the upright Volkswagen ID.4. Its longer body more than offsets the lower roof.
Pick a priority — we’ll show the numbers that matter and tell you which car we’d choose.

Both wear the same five-star ANCAP result from the 2021 test, valid to 2028, with 93 per cent for adult occupants and 89 per cent for children, and both run the same standard suite: autonomous emergency braking that detects pedestrians and cyclists, lane keep assist, adaptive cruise and blind-spot monitoring. Reviewers rate the calm, un-nagging assist tuning on both.

The one axis with a lean. The ID.5 carries a slightly bigger seats-up boot at 549 litres to the ID.4's 543, but growing families will feel the ID.4's advantages more: its taller roof frees up rear headroom, it folds down to a bigger 1,575-litre load bay, it tows more, and it costs less. The upright twin is the family default.
Based on Everyday & family, we’d pick the Volkswagen ID.4.

ID.4
ID.5
The ID.4 is the cheaper way into this pair, and on paper it is the same car as the ID.5: the same MEB platform, the same 82 and 84kWh batteries, the same 175kW DC and 11kW AC charging, the same 210kW Pro and 250kW GTX drivetrains, the same five-star ANCAP and the same five-year, unlimited-kilometre warranty.
The ID.5 is the ID.4 in a fastback suit, and the surprise is how little the sleeker roofline costs you.

Opinions are our own.
Buy the ID.4, in rear-drive Pro form, if you want the cheaper way into this pair and the more practical family cabin. As of 2026 it undercuts the ID.5 by about $3,000 at the Pro grade, gives taller rear passengers more headroom and folds down to a bigger boot, all for the same range, charging, safety and warranty. The value pick, and the roomier one.
Explore the ID.4Buy the ID.5, again in Pro form, if the fastback styling seals it. As of 2026 you pay about $3,000 more than the ID.4 and lose a little rear headroom to the sloping roof, but you gain a slightly bigger seats-up boot and, on the GTX, a touch more range. It is the rare style choice that barely costs you anything practical.
