The short version

MG did the sums Australia's EV shoppers keep asking the establishment to do. It took a mid-size electric SUV, gave the rear-drive version 530 kilometres of WLTP range and a cabin full of heated leather and big screens, and, unusually, kept real buttons for the climate and volume. Then it wrote $49,990 driveaway on the windscreen. Launched in May 2026 as the biggest electric car MG sells here, the S6 is the brand's most serious tilt yet at the mid-size EV mainstream. It is not the sharpest EV to drive, but as value it is hard to argue with.

Living with the S6.

The S6 EV is MG's value play in Australia's most-contested class, and a deliberate shot at the mainstream favourites that own it. Two versions are on sale, both drawing on the same 77kWh battery and both wearing the single, high-spec Essence trim: the rear-drive Essence from $49,990 driveaway and the dual-motor all-wheel-drive from $56,990 (August 2026). The rear-driver claims the longer range at 530km; the all-wheel-drive trades range for speed. For most buyers the real question is simply which of the two to pick, and on the evidence this page lands on the rear-driver.

The rear-drive Essence is the volume seller and the smarter buy. Its 180kW motor covers 0-100km/h in a claimed 7.5 seconds, brisk enough for any family duty, and its lighter single-motor layout is the efficient one, using 145Wh/km against the all-wheel-drive's 160. That efficiency, plus the sizeable battery, is where the 530km range comes from. Standard kit is generous for the money: heated and ventilated front seats, a 12.8-inch touchscreen with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, a head-up display and a 360-degree camera all feature. MG backs the car with a seven-year, unlimited-kilometre warranty and a seven-year battery warranty, which does a lot to take the risk out of an unfamiliar badge.

The all-wheel-drive Essence exists for buyers who want the pace and the glass. A second motor lifts outputs to 266kW and 540Nm and drops the 0-100km/h sprint to 5.1 seconds, genuinely quick for the money, and it adds the panoramic glassroof the rear-driver goes without. The trade-offs are real: about 45km less range at 485km, a smaller front boot, and roughly $7,000 more (August 2026). The near-unanimous verdict from the Australian press: the step up buys speed most owners will rarely use, while the rear-driver keeps the longer range and every feature that matters. It is a competent performance EV, just a niche one.

Underneath, the S6 rides on MG's Modular Scalable Platform, shared with the smaller S5 EV, and charges at up to 144kW on DC, a 10 to 80 per cent top-up in about 38 minutes. That is competitive with the mainstream rather than class-leading. The cabin is where it earns its keep: a roomy five-seat layout, a 581-litre boot with a frunk on top, a standard heat pump, and physical controls for the climate and media, a welcome relief for those wary of navigating a touchscreen while driving. The compromises are honest ones. Launch reviews converge on a firm, busy low-speed ride and driver-assist that chimes and misreads speed signs until you tame it. Judge the S6 on range, space, equipment and price rather than driving polish, and on those terms it makes one of the strongest value cases in the class.

7 EVs

MG's Australian electric range

The S6 took MG's local EV line-up to seven, its third electric launch of 2026.

The range

S6 Range Walk

The S6 range is simple: one Essence trim, two drivetrains, the same 77kWh battery, separated by about $7,000. The rear-drive is the value buy and the range champion; the all-wheel-drive trades range for speed and adds a glassroof. The rungs below show what the step up buys.

  1. 01

    Essence RWD

    Best value, the smart buy

    From $49,990

The entry point at $49,990 driveaway. Rear-wheel drive, 180kW, a line-up-best 530km of range, and the full Essence kit: a 12.8-inch screen with wireless CarPlay and Android Auto, head-up display, 360 camera, heated and ventilated front seats. No sunroof.

  2. 02

    Essence AWD

Best for pace and the roof

    From $56,990

About $7,000 more for a second motor, 266kW and 540Nm, a 5.1-second 0-100km/h, all-wheel-drive traction and the panoramic glassroof. The trade-offs are 45km less range at 485km and a smaller front boot.

The verdict

Buy the S6 Essence RWD if you want the most electric SUV for the money: 530km of range, a loaded cabin, real buttons and a five-star ANCAP rating, from $49,990 driveaway (August 2026). It undercuts the Tesla Model Y and BYD Sealion 7 while matching them for size and space, and the seven-year warranty takes much of the risk out of an unfamiliar badge. Leave the $56,990 all-wheel-drive unless the panoramic roof or the 5.1-second sprint sell you, because the pace costs you range. The Model Y still charges faster, and reviewers hand it the driving verdict over the firmer-riding S6, so cross-shop it if polish leads your brief. But few electric SUVs this size feel this complete at the price.

Where it shines
  • Undercuts the Model Y and Sealion 7 on driveaway price
  • 530km of range from the value rear-drive
  • Generously equipped in a single high-spec trim
  • Keeps physical climate and media controls
  • Five-star ANCAP safety, tested 2025
  • Seven-year warranty, seven years on the battery
Worth weighing up
  • Firm, busy ride over low-speed bumps
  • Driver-assist nags by default until tailored
  • 144kW DC charging trails faster rivals
  • No sunroof on the rear-drive Essence
  • Unproven resale as a brand-new nameplate
The back story

Where the S6 has been.

Past generations. Context, not the car on sale today.

The S6 EV is a brand-new nameplate for MG in Australia, launched in May 2026 with no prior local generation, so it carries no legacy fault history. It rides on MG's Modular Scalable Platform, shared with the smaller S5 EV and the MG 4, and arrives as the largest and priciest of MG's seven-strong Australian EV range, below the separate IM sub-brand. No recall is on record as of August 2026.
