The MG S5 is the pick for most buyers: it is the sweeter drive, tests safer on the more recent crash result, and backs itself with a 10-year warranty the BYD cannot match. Choose the BYD ATTO 3 for more range and efficiency, and, in 800-volt Premium form, faster charging and quicker pace.
10yr
The MG S5 backs itself with a 10-year, 250,000km warranty when serviced through MG, against the BYD ATTO 3's six years and 150,000km. The value newcomer, not the established global brand, offers the longer vehicle cover, though BYD's eight-year battery warranty runs a year past MG's.

Value is genuinely contested. On price the two are line-ball once you read the fine print, since the ATTO 3's headline figures are before on-road costs and the MG's are drive-away, so the BYD's apparent entry saving narrows to almost nothing once on-roads are added. From there the MG makes the stronger case: a 10-year, 250,000km warranty to the BYD's six years, $300 capped servicing, and a base grade with more comfort kit as standard. The BYD counters with more range, lower energy use and a longer eight-year battery warranty. For features and cover per dollar, the MG takes it.
Based on Running costs, we’d pick the MG S5.

Safety leans to the MG. Both hold a five-star ANCAP rating, but the S5 was tested in 2025 and posts 82 per cent for vulnerable road users to the ATTO 3's 69 and 86 per cent for child occupants to 84. The ATTO 3 edges back on adult occupant protection, 91 to 90 per cent, and safety assist, 80 to 79, but its rating comes from a 2022 test of the original car and ANCAP has not yet tested the EVO update. Both fit seven airbags and the full active-safety suite as standard, so the gap is modest but the MG's result is fresher.
Based on Safety, we’d pick the MG S5.

For family duty the MG edges it. It holds the fresher five-star safety result, fits a slightly bigger boot seats-up at 453 litres to the base ATTO 3's 440, and reads richer at the base grade with a standard panoramic sunroof, heated seats and wireless charging. The ATTO 3 answers with more range to cut charging stops on a trip, and in EVO Premium form a bigger 490-litre boot plus a 101-litre front boot for cables. Both seat five in comfort and share near-identical exterior dimensions. For the mainstream family buyer the MG is the safer, better-equipped pick.
Based on Everyday & family, we’d pick the MG S5.
The ATTO 3 EVO wears a sharper 2026 face, with full-width daytime running lights and new 18-inch alloys, over the same 4,455mm body. It reads as the more expressive of the two, and BYD classes it as a medium SUV.
The S5 is the tidier, more athletic shape at 4,476mm, with the angular lighting of the MG 4 family it shares a platform with. It looks the keener car to place and park, and the standard panoramic roof lifts it.

ATTO 3
S5
The ATTO 3 is the big-brand value EV, and in its 2026 EVO update it grew a proper range ceiling.
The S5 chases something most value EVs never bother with: a drive worth having.

you lead with range, efficiency and charging speed. The ATTO 3 EVO Premium claims 510km and moves to an 800-volt system for 220kW DC charging, beyond anything the MG offers, and its 230kW rear motor is the quickest here at 5.5 seconds. The base Essential is the efficiency champion at 148Wh/km, and the 15.6-inch touchscreen is the bigger of the two. Just know it is an easy rather than engaging drive, the comfort kit arrives with the EVO Dynamic, and its five-star rating dates to a 2022 test of the pre-EVO car. Buy the Premium for the flagship, the Dynamic for the value sweet spot.
Explore the ATTO 3you want the better drive, the fresher safety and the longest warranty. The S5 inherits the MG 4's engaging rear-drive chassis, holds a 2025 five-star ANCAP rating with a stronger vulnerable-road-user score against a 2022 test of the pre-EVO ATTO 3, and fits heated seats, a panoramic sunroof, wireless charging and keyless entry from the base grade. Then there is the 10-year, 250,000km warranty when serviced with MG. You give up some range and charging speed to the ATTO 3, and the base motor is tame. Buy the Essence 49 for value in late 2026, or the $46,990 Essence 62 for 450km and 150kW.
