MG S5 or MG S6: which should you buy?

Buy the MG S6 if you want the bigger car, since it adds a size class of cabin and boot, more range and faster charging for about eight thousand more. Buy the MG S5 if a lower price, an easier city footprint and the longer warranty term matter more. Same brand and dealer network, two different jobs.

128L

The boot gap

The MG S6's 581-litre boot holds 128 litres more than the MG S5's 453, the clearest sign the dearer car is a real size step up and not just a longer nameplate.

MG S5 vs MG S6: design

MG

The S5 opens with the tidy, low-set face it inherits from the MG 4 hatch beneath it. Slim LED lamps, a closed-off nose and short overhangs mark it out as the compact, city-sized car of the two, riding on 18-inch wheels. It reads neat and grown-up rather than showy, a small SUV at home in a tight car park.

MG

The S6 presents a broader, taller nose and a wider track, the more substantial face of the pair. From the three-quarter it looks unmistakably the bigger car, a medium SUV where the S5 is a small one, with a full-width light signature and 20-inch wheels filling the arches. Presence is part of what the extra money buys.

The honest take on the MG S5 and MG S6

On the MG S5

The S5 is the sensible-money end of MG's electric SUV range, and its case is that you rarely need the bigger car.

On the MG S6

The S6 is the step up in MG's electric line, and the money buys a genuinely larger car rather than a longer badge.

The verdict

Which is better: the MG S5 or the MG S6?

Pick the S5 if

the budget and the city lead the brief. At $41,990 drive-away the Essence 49 is the cheaper way into a tested-safe, well-warranted MG EV, and its 4,476mm body is the easier one to park and place. Pick the Essence 49 for pure value on 335km of range; step to the $46,990 Long Range for 450km, still inside the small-SUV footprint.

Explore the S5
Pick the S6 if

space and range lead your list. At $49,990 drive-away the rear-drive Essence hands you the bigger car: a 581-litre boot, the longest 530km range here, and a plusher cabin with a head-up display and ventilated seats standard. Pick the rear-drive Essence for the value and the distance; the $56,990 AWD is worth it only for its 266kW pace and glass roof.
