BYD Sealion 7 vs Zeekr 7X

At the entry price the Sealion 7 wins the value read cleanly. The Premium lists at $54,990 before on-road costs against the 7X RWD's $57,900, and for the smaller outlay it adds genuine leather, ventilated front seats and a head-up display the base 7X goes without, plus a bigger 82.56kWh battery and a six-year warranty against five. The 7X's answer is not the sticker but what the extra money runs: far faster charging, more power and better ownership terms. So the Sealion 7 is the value buy up front, while the 7X argues it is worth the step up. For the buyer whose budget sets the grade, the BYD is the safer value call.

This is the 7X's headline advantage and it is not close. The Zeekr runs an 800-volt architecture that accepts up to 450kW on DC and claims 10 to 80 per cent in 13 minutes on a compatible ultra-fast charger. The Sealion 7 uses a 400-volt system with a 150kW DC peak and a claimed 32 minutes for the same top-up. On AC the gap holds, 22kW for the Zeekr against 11kW for the BYD, which shortens a home or destination charge too. For a household charging mostly at home overnight the difference matters less; for anyone who leans on public fast chargers or takes long trips, the 7X's charging hardware is the reason to pay more.

At the entry price the two are level: the Sealion 7 Premium claims 482km WLTP and the 7X RWD 480km, close enough to call a tie. The Sealion 7 Performance drops to a claimed 456km because the all-wheel-drive hardware costs efficiency. The 7X's advantage arrives one grade up. The $63,900 Long Range RWD swaps the base LFP pack for a 100kWh nickel manganese cobalt battery and a claimed 615km, the longest figure in this comparison, for near the money of the Sealion 7 Performance. So base for base the range is even; if the longest single-charge distance is the priority, the 7X Long Range is the car that delivers it.

The Zeekr leads on paper at every grade. The base 7X RWD makes 310kW for a claimed 6.0-second sprint to 100km/h, where the Sealion 7 Premium's single motor makes 230kW and claims 6.7. At the top the 7X Performance AWD's 475kW and 710Nm claim 3.8 seconds against the Sealion 7 Performance's 390kW and 4.5. The catch is price: the Sealion 7 Performance costs $63,990 against the 7X Performance's $72,900, so the BYD undercuts the quicker Zeekr flagship by nearly $9,000. Both cars are far brisker than any family buyer needs, so this axis matters most to the enthusiast: the Zeekr is quicker, the BYD cheaper for its pace.

At base the Sealion 7 is the surprise. The Premium comes with genuine leather, heated and ventilated front seats, a head-up display and a 12-speaker Dynaudio system as standard, where the base 7X runs synthetic trim, no ventilation and no head-up display. The Zeekr counters with tri-zone climate to the BYD's dual-zone, a larger, sharper 16-inch screen on Qualcomm's newer 8295 chip, and a cabin reviewers liken to Audi. Move up the range and the 7X takes the lead: the Long Range adds a 36-inch head-up display, ventilation and massage and a 21-speaker stereo, the Performance Nappa leather. So the Sealion 7 wins the base cabin on standard luxury, the 7X wins it higher up.

Neither sweeps it. The Sealion 7 carries a six-year, 150,000km warranty against the 7X's five years, and both back the battery for eight years and 160,000km. But the Zeekr's warranty has no kilometre cap where the BYD's stops at 150,000km, which favours high-distance drivers, and the 7X services every 24 months or 40,000km against the Sealion 7's yearly 20,000km visits, so it sees the workshop half as often. Roadside assistance splits it widest: five years with the Zeekr against twelve months with the BYD. Australian press reports put the 7X's capped servicing near $2,400 over five years and the Sealion 7's around $3,440 across eight.

Both wear a five-star ANCAP rating from 2025 testing, so neither is the unsafe choice. The sub-scores trade blows. The Sealion 7 scores higher for child occupant protection at 93 per cent against the 7X's 87, while the 7X leads adult occupant protection at 91 per cent against 87, and the two tie on safety assist at 78 per cent. Both ship the full active-safety set as standard, including autonomous emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, lane support, blind-spot monitoring, a driver-attention monitor and a 360-degree camera. The Sealion 7 edges the child score and the 7X the adult score, which is why we call safety a tie rather than a win for either.

Route it by what you rate most. The Sealion 7 is the pick for the value-first buyer: it opens cheaper, gives more standard leather, ventilation and head-up display at base, holds the longer six-year warranty, and its Performance grade undercuts the Zeekr flagship by nearly $9,000. The 7X earns the step up for three concrete things: charging three times faster on DC, an ownership package with five-year roadside cover and half the service visits, and a Long Range grade that stretches to a claimed 615km. Both are five-star safe and near-identical in size. Charge at home and shop on price, the BYD; fast-charge, tour or want the techier car, the Zeekr.
