Pick the Hyundai IONIQ 5 N for engagement and fast charging: it is the more involving performance EV, and its 800-volt system charges in half the time. Pick the Ford Mustang Mach-E GT for value and range, since it costs $14,639 less driveaway and travels further between charges. Neither is ANCAP rated.
18 min
The Hyundai IONIQ 5 N runs an 800-volt system that fills from 10 to 80 per cent in about 18 minutes. The Ford Mustang Mach-E GT, on 150kW, needs around 36 minutes for the same charge, twice as long.
Pick a priority — we’ll show the numbers that matter and tell you which car we’d choose.

Neither car is ANCAP rated: the IONIQ 5 N is excluded from the Ioniq 5's five-star result, and the Mach-E GT is excluded from the Select and Premium's. Both still fit a full active-safety suite of autonomous emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, lane-keep assist, blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert, and the IONIQ 5 N also runs a driver-attention monitor and head-up display. With no star rating on either, safety is a wash between two well-equipped but untested performance EVs.

Both seat five and carry a family's gear. The IONIQ 5 N has the bigger boot at 480 litres, 1,540 with the seats folded, plus rear air vents and vehicle-to-load. The Mustang Mach-E GT holds 402 litres and 1,420 folded, but adds a 49-litre frunk under the bonnet for the charging cables. The Hyundai takes practicality on outright boot volume; the Ford's frunk narrows it. A narrow win to the IONIQ 5 N.
Based on Everyday & family, we’d pick the Hyundai IONIQ 5 N.
The Mustang Mach-E GT wears Ford's pony badge on a wide, low electric SUV nose, with slim LED lights and a closed-off grille panel that marks it as an EV. The GT adds its own front treatment and sits on performance rubber. It is handsome and restrained rather than aggressive, a five-door SUV that borrows the Mustang name more than the coupe's drama.
The IONIQ 5 N turns up the aggression over the standard Ioniq 5: a deeper front bumper with air guides, N-specific lower intakes and a motorsport-flavoured stance on 21-inch wheels. Parametric pixel LED lights carry over from the donor car, but the N's wider, lower set-up and body addenda leave no doubt it is the performance version. It looks the part.

Opinions are our own.
Value and range lead your brief. It undercuts the IONIQ 5 N on price and claims 67km more on the WLTP cycle, at 515km. You want a quick, roomy electric SUV with the biggest screen in the pair and seven years of roadside assist, and you are happy to trade the Hyundai's engagement and 18-minute fast charging for a lower price and a longer leg between stops.
Explore the Mustang Mach-EDriver engagement and charging speed matter most, and the premium is one you can absorb. It is the most involving EV on the Australian consensus, with e-Shift, a limited-slip differential and a locally tuned chassis, a published 3.5-second sprint, and an 800-volt system that charges in half the Ford's time. You accept paying the premium and giving up 67km of claimed range for the better performance car.
