A close five-star split. Both are rated five stars, but the Tank 500's result is fresher, tested in 2024, and scores higher for child protection at 93 per cent to 85 and for vulnerable road users at 81 to 69. The MU-X's 2022 rating counters with eight airbags to the Tank 500's six. Both run the expected driver aids. Fresher scores versus more airbags is a genuine trade.
A genuine tie.
Both cars handle safetyequally well — this one’s a draw.

The Tank 500 takes performance easily. Its 2.0-litre turbo-petrol hybrid makes a combined 255kW and 648Nm, and the plug-in Ultra lifts that to 342kW, more than double the MU-X diesel's 120 to 140kW. The Isuzu's diesel torque suits towing and touring on less fuel, but for outright power and pace the GWM is well clear. On grunt, it is no contest.
Based on Performance, we’d pick the GWM Tank 500.

The Tank 500 is the better-equipped cabin by a clear margin. It brings bigger screens, heated front seats and a longer standard features list even in entry Lux trim, where the MU-X's cabin is plainer and charges more for the same kit. Both cover the connectivity basics. But on screens, standard equipment and cabin presentation, the newer GWM is well ahead of the Isuzu.
Based on Tech, we’d pick the GWM Tank 500.

Both seat seven and both make sensible family cars. The GWM adds heated seats, bigger screens and a fresher safety rating; the MU-X answers with more airbags, a lower price, cheaper running and the roomier boot in every configuration, 311 litres behind the third row to the Tank 500's 98. The plug-in Ultra Tank 500 drops to five seats. For kit the Tank 500 leads, for space and value the MU-X does.
A genuine tie.

The MU-X is the roomier load-hauler in every configuration. It holds 311 litres behind its third row to the Tank 500's 98, so day to day with seven seats up it carries far more, and it stays ahead folded flat, 2,138 litres to the Tank 500's 1,459. The Tank 500's boot is the smaller of the two whether the seats are up or down, so for outright cargo the Isuzu is the clear pick.
Based on Storage, we’d pick the Isuzu MU-X.

Line-ball off-road. Both are ladder-frame four-wheel-drives with low-range gearing, and their clearance is close, at 230mm for the MU-X to the Tank 500's 220. The MU-X is lighter by some 700kg and carries Isuzu's proven off-road record, where the heavier Tank 500 brings more power and cabin tech. Both will handle serious tracks, so it comes down to whether you value proven simplicity or the newer hardware.
A genuine tie.
Both cars handle off-roadequally well — this one’s a draw.
Pick a priority above to see how the GWM Tank 500 and Isuzu MU-X stack up on what matters to you.
The Tank 500 wears a big, boxy, retro-flavoured face, with a broad upright grille, square lights and chunky detailing that give it real road presence. It is styled to look expensive and rugged at once, a deliberate nod to classic 4WDs at a sharp price. Where the MU-X is plain and functional, the Tank 500 is bold and design-led, making the most of its size to look like more money than it costs.
The MU-X wears Isuzu's honest, workmanlike face, a broad grille and slim LED headlights that look purposeful rather than flashy. It shares its ladder-frame underpinnings and much of its front with the D-Max ute, and it looks every bit the tough, no-nonsense diesel it is. There is little chrome and no drama, just a clean, rugged front end built to earn its keep on farms, worksites and the open road.

The Tank 500 is the value newcomer that throws equipment and power at the segment, and it makes a loud first impression.
The MU-X is the proven, efficient value pick in this pair, and its case starts with price.

Opinions are our own.
Power, standard features, the newest safety rating and a long warranty matter more to you than efficiency or a proven badge. You want the 255kW hybrid drivetrain, the heated seats and big screens from the entry Lux, the fresher 2024 five-star result and the seven-year warranty, and you accept the higher fuel use, the 3000kg tow limit and an unproven brand to have them.
Explore the Tank 500A low price, diesel efficiency, strong towing and proven reliability matter more to you than power or the newest features. You want the sub-$50,000 entry, the diesel economy, the 3500kg towing and the eight airbags, plus Isuzu's hard-wearing diesel record, and you are happy with a plainer cabin and a 2022 safety rating to keep the price and running costs down.
