The MG S5 EV is the more rounded choice: it alone holds a five-star ANCAP rating, it steers with more polish thanks to its rear-drive layout, and its Long Range covers the most distance. Choose the Jaecoo J5 EV instead when a lower drive-away price, a fuller standard-equipment list and more power outweigh an independent safety score.
155kW
The more affordable Jaecoo J5 EV makes the most power here: its 155kW motor tops even the pricier MG S5 Long Range's 150kW, though the rear-drive MG is widely rated the sweeter car to steer.

Value is the Jaecoo's home turf. The $36,990 drive-away launch offer runs to 30 September 2026 and holds the on-road figure down, and it still slips under the MG's entry price on a matched basis. It comes well equipped, with cooled front seats and ambient lighting as standard, while the MG answers with built-in navigation and a heated steering wheel. The MG brings a tested rating and a bigger, sweeter-driving car, but on the ticket, the Jaecoo comes out ahead.
Based on Running costs, we’d pick the Jaecoo J5 EV.

Only one car here has faced the crash lab. The MG holds a five-star ANCAP score dated 2025, marked 90 per cent for adults and 86 for children across every variant. The Jaecoo has not been rated, though it does fit seven airbags and a matching set of driver aids, and its maker is betting on five stars once tested. Both look well armed on paper, yet the independent tick belongs to the MG alone. The MG takes safety.
Based on Safety, we’d pick the MG S5.

For family life the MG is the fuller package. It is the longer car, on a wheelbase 110mm greater, with a 1,441-litre boot once the rear seats fold, and it wears the five-star ANCAP rating a lot of parents shortlist first. The Jaecoo hits back with standard cooled seats, a light-filled glass roof and the lower price, and a smaller household might want nothing more. Still, on room and a tested result, the MG earns the nod.
Based on Everyday & family, we’d pick the MG S5.
Head-on the Jaecoo plays big. A tall, blunt nose, a deep upright grille and short overhangs give the compact SUV the stance of a shrunken luxury four-wheel drive, and the fitted glass roof relieves an otherwise tall, chunky body. It is the more theatrical face of the two, and the one that photographs well above its asking price.
The MG opens with a calmer expression, its slim lamps and low-set nose carrying over the tidy look of the MG 4 hatch it shares its bones with. From the three-quarter it reads as the longer, more conventional car of the pair, a neat and grown-up small SUV rather than a statement piece. Restrained, and quietly a class above the sticker.

J5 EV
S5
For a first electric SUV bought on the sticker, the Jaecoo J5 EV makes the loudest opening argument.
Spend a little more and the MG S5 EV answers with the things the Jaecoo cannot yet match.

Opinions are our own.
Budget is the brief, and the Jaecoo answers it twice: the cheapest way onto the road, and a deep standard-kit list once there, from dual-zone air to cooled front seats, a panoramic roof and ambient lighting. Most of your week is town driving, so 402km is comfortable headroom. A trailer turns up now and then, and only the Jaecoo's 1,250kg braked rating suits it. And the saving outweighs a crash-test badge you can factor in with everything else.
Explore the J5 EVA tested result carries weight, and only the MG brings a five-star ANCAP rating. The way it drives matters too: rear-wheel drive, neatly balanced and the keener car on a back road. You want the roomier cabin for family duty, with the longer wheelbase and the deeper folded boot. And if the odometer climbs, the Long Range's 62kWh battery and 450km stretch furthest between plugs, for an entry price several thousand above the Jaecoo.
