Pick the Volvo EX40 Single Motor Extended Range for most buyers: it carries a bigger battery, charges faster on a DC fast charger, claims more range and more power, and asks less before on-road costs. Choose the MINI Countryman E Classic for its design-led cabin, bigger boot, 22kW home charging and a current five-star ANCAP rating.
1,450L
Fold the rear seats and the MINI Countryman Electric holds 1,450 litres to the Volvo EX40's 965, close to 500 litres more cargo room in the smaller-looking, design-led MINI.
Pick a priority — we’ll show the numbers that matter and tell you which car we’d choose.

A genuine tie.
Both cars handle running costsequally well — this one’s a draw.

The MINI holds a current five-star ANCAP rating from 2024, scoring 83 per cent for adult and 86 per cent for child occupants across the range. The Volvo EX40 is currently unrated: its 2018 five-star rating has lapsed and ANCAP has not re-tested it. Both run the full active-safety kit, so the split here is the badge, not the hardware.
Based on Safety, we’d pick the Mini Countryman Electric.

The MINI is the bigger boot: 460 litres with the seats up and 1,450 folded, against the EX40's 410 and 965. Both seat five under a panoramic roof with heated front seats standard. The Volvo's counter is a tight 11-metre turning circle that makes it the easier car to park in the city.
Based on Everyday & family, we’d pick the Mini Countryman Electric.
The Countryman wears MINI's boldest face yet: upright, short on overhang and unmistakably MINI, with octagonal grille framing and contrast-roof options that lean into the brand's playful identity. At 4,445mm long and 1,635mm tall, this is the biggest MINI yet, and the high nose and squared wheel arches give it more road presence than the badge's city-car roots suggest. The look is deliberate theatre, the opposite of the Volvo's restraint.
The EX40 keeps the familiar XC40 silhouette, softened for electric duty with a closed-off grille, Thor's-hammer running lights and the upright, confident Scandinavian stance Volvo's SUVs are known for. At 4,440mm long and 1,873mm wide, it matches the MINI almost exactly for length but runs a touch broader, and the clean surfacing favours calm over drama. Where the MINI shouts, the Volvo keeps its lines quiet.

Countryman Electric
EX40
The electric Countryman is the biggest MINI yet, and it leans hard on design to justify a premium price.
The EX40 is Volvo's original electric SUV wearing its newer name, and a $7,000 price cut turned the quiet achiever of the range into a value argument.

Opinions are our own.
Buy the MINI if the knitted-dash cabin is why you're shopping, you want the bigger boot and 22kW home charging, and a current five-star ANCAP rating matters. The E Classic has the longest range in the MINI family and the lowest price, so start here and step up only for pace.
Explore the Countryman ElectricBuy the EX40 if you want the longer claimed range, faster road-trip DC charging and more power, with a conventional buttons-and-Google cabin. The Single Motor is the pick of the pair: more range than the Twin for $5,000 less. Budget the on-road costs on top of the list price.
