Volvo EX40 vs Zeekr 7X

Read both as list prices, because that is how each brand quotes. The Volvo EX40 opens at $69,990 before on-road costs after its April 2026 cut, and the Zeekr 7X starts at $57,900 on the same basis, so the Zeekr undercuts it by $12,090 at entry while being a size class larger. On-road costs add several thousand more per state on either car, and each brand's site quotes a driveaway figure once you enter a postcode. The Volvo EX40 Single Motor Extended Range claims 520km of WLTP range, and the Twin Motor claims 485km, both from an 82kWh battery. The Zeekr 7X splits its range by grade: the entry RWD claims 480km from a 75kWh battery, while the Long Range RWD steps up to a 100kWh pack and 615km, comfortably past anything the Volvo offers. The Performance AWD sits between them at 543km. So the entry Zeekr trails the Volvo on paper, but the grade most buyers choose, the Long Range, leads the field. Real-world range on either drops with speed, cold and load, as with any EV.

The Zeekr 7X charges far faster. Its 800-volt system accepts up to 450kW of DC charging on the entry car, and Zeekr claims a 10 to 80 per cent top-up in 13 minutes on a compatible ultra-fast charger. The Volvo EX40 peaks lower and claims 28 minutes for the same 10 to 80 per cent session. On AC the Zeekr also leads, at up to 22kW against the Volvo's 11kW. The practical upshot is that a short stop puts far more range back into the Zeekr. If you rely on public fast-charging, this is one of the clearest gaps between the two.

The Zeekr 7X carries a current five-star ANCAP rating from 2025 testing, with a 91 per cent adult occupant score and seven airbags. The Volvo EX40 is currently unrated: its 2018 result expired in December 2024, and Volvo XC40-based cars built from January 2025 are listed as unrated, so we do not borrow an old or overseas star. That does not mean the Volvo is unsafe, its driver-assist suite is extensive and standard, but if a current independent crash rating is a hard requirement, the Zeekr answers it and the Volvo cannot. For safety-led buyers this is the decisive line.

The Zeekr 7X is the larger car by a clear margin. At 4,787mm it is 347mm longer than the 4,440mm Volvo EX40, rides a longer wheelbase, and its boot runs to 539 litres against the Volvo's 410, expanding to almost 2,000 litres with the seats folded. Both seat five and both fit a panoramic roof, heated seats and a 360-degree camera. For a growing family the Zeekr simply has more room. The Volvo's smaller footprint is a genuine plus for buyers who want an easy-to-park premium SUV rather than the biggest one, so the size gap cuts both ways depending on what you need.

On sheer equipment the Zeekr 7X leads. It fits a 16-inch central screen against the Volvo's 9-inch, tri-zone climate to the Volvo's dual-zone, and a long standard list that road testers rate above its price bracket. The Volvo EX40 answers with the cabin finish reviewers praise, its Google-built infotainment with wired Apple CarPlay, and the single-grade Ultra strategy that fits heated front seats, a heated wheel and a panoramic roof to every car. Both bring a 360-degree camera, ambient lighting and keyless entry. If you measure a cabin by its spec sheet the Zeekr wins; if you measure it by badge and finish, the Volvo keeps its case.

The two match on paper: both carry a five-year, unlimited-kilometre warranty, eight years or 160,000km on the battery, and five years of roadside assistance. The Zeekr 7X quotes a 24-month or 40,000km service interval and Australian press puts capped servicing around $2,400 over five years, though Zeekr does not publish servicing on its site. Where the Volvo pulls ahead is maturity: an established dealer network across Australia and a resale track record the year-old Zeekr brand cannot yet show. If ownership certainty and residual value weigh heavily, the Volvo has the safer story; on headline cover alone, it is a tie.

They are corporate cousins. Both Volvo and Zeekr sit under the Geely group, and reviewers often note the Zeekr shares its engineering stable with Volvo and Polestar. In practice they aim at different buyers: the Volvo EX40 leans on an established European badge, a compact premium footprint and refinement, while the Zeekr 7X uses the group's scale to deliver more size, range and charging hardware for less money. So the family link is real but the pitch is opposite: the EX40 sells maturity and the badge, the 7X sells value and hardware. Cross-shopping them is fair, and increasingly common.
