Toyota LandCruiser 300 or Toyota LandCruiser 70: which should you buy?

Most buyers should take the LandCruiser 300 GX. It holds a current five-star rating, it is nicer to sit in, and it is easier to live with every day. Buy the 70 GXL Wagon when the work comes first: diff locks at both ends, a bigger payload and more in reserve with a trailer on the back, so long as two airbags and no safety rating do not rule it out.

Axle diff locks

The LandCruiser 70 GXL Wagon locks its front and rear differentials as standard. The LandCruiser 300 GX locks neither, running a centre differential lock instead. On August 2026 pricing, spending $21,109 more buys fewer axle lockers, not more.

Toyota LandCruiser 300 vs Toyota LandCruiser 70: design

Toyota

The 300's face is the softer of the two by some margin, with body-colour bumpers, a broad grille sized to look like money, and headlights that wrap into the guards. At GX grade the detailing is plainer than the price suggests, since the chrome and the bigger wheels arrive further up the range. It is 1,980mm across, the wider car here by 110mm, and it looks it head-on.

Toyota

Round LED headlights and a black mesh grille, styled deliberately to echo the 70 Series of forty years ago rather than to modernise it. The A-pillar snorkel and the black guard extensions are standard fitment, not dealer accessories, and the bonnet keeps its heritage pressing. At 1,870mm wide it is the narrower vehicle, which matters more on a tight bush track than it does in a car park.

Editorial

The honest take on the Toyota LandCruiser 300 and Toyota LandCruiser 70

On the Toyota LandCruiser 300

The GX is the entry point to the 300 Series, and it still reads like a modern vehicle in a way its stablemate does not.

On the Toyota LandCruiser 70

The 70 Series wagon comes in two grades, WorkMate and GXL, and this is the better-equipped one.

The verdict

Which is better: the Toyota LandCruiser 300 or the Toyota LandCruiser 70?

Pick the LandCruiser 300 if

The car will regularly carry passengers, or a fleet policy requires a current safety rating. It is the quicker and better-equipped vehicle, the only one of the two whose crash performance has been measured, and as of August 2026 it costs $1,250 less to service across five years. The $21,109 premium buys a genuinely more modern car. Skip it if you need seven seats, because the GX is a five-seater and the GXL grade above it is the answer there.

Explore the LandCruiser 300
Pick the LandCruiser 70 if

The job is weight and terrain rather than distance and company. It holds the higher GVM at 3,510kg, the higher combined ceiling at 7,010kg, a 1,210kg payload, locking differentials on both axles, 290mm of clearance, and a bigger tank. You accept two airbags, no current safety rating, manual air conditioning and a dearer service bill. For remote work with real loads that trade is sound. For school runs it is not.
