The GWM Tank 500 is the better buy for most families: it costs more than $30,000 less, services half as often, and matches the Toyota LandCruiser 300 on wheelbase, turning circle and five-star safety. Choose the LandCruiser 300 if you tow near 3,500kg or cover long remote distances, where its rating and 110-litre tank decide it.
$2,200
Toyota asks for a LandCruiser 300 service every six months or 10,000km, twice as often as the GWM Tank 500. Over five years on the capped-price schedules that's $4,200 against $2,000.

Both hold five stars, and the pillars split rather than separate. The LandCruiser 300 leads adult occupant protection 89 per cent to 85; the Tank 500 leads child occupant protection 93 to 88; vulnerable road user protection ties at 81. The tests aren't the same vintage, though, and the Tank 500's 2024 rating was earned against tougher criteria than the LandCruiser's 2022 result. Toyota has never submitted the GR Sport, which holds no rating at all. Too close to call.
A genuine tie.
Both cars handle safetyequally well — this one’s a draw.

One engine covers the LandCruiser 300: a 3.3-litre twin-turbo V6 diesel making 227kW and 700Nm through a 10-speed automatic. The Tank 500's hybrid makes more power at 255kW but less torque at 648Nm, so the diesel still out-pulls it. The plug-in Hi4-T settles it on paper with 300kW and 750Nm. Toyota's own 341kW hybrid answers this in time, but it isn't on sale yet. Power to the GWM, torque to the diesel, and the plug-in breaks the tie.
Based on Performance, we’d pick the GWM Tank 500.

The GWM Tank 500 has the more complete tech stack. Both cars are solid for 2026, but the GWM Tank 500 pushes further with the extras.

Both offer seven seats, and both drop to five at the top of the range. The LandCruiser 300 seats seven in GXL, VX and Sahara trim, but the cheapest of those is $120,415, while the Tank 500's hybrid grades seat seven from around $75,000. The Tank 500 adds standard leather and a 360-degree camera on top. Its plug-in hybrid is the exception, trading the third row for its battery. Seven seats for $45,000 less is the whole argument.
Based on Family, we’d pick the GWM Tank 500.

Closer than the price suggests. The LandCruiser 300 clears 245mm and swings 31 degrees of approach to the Tank 500's 30, with 25 degrees of departure to 24. Both run dual-range transfer cases and locking differentials, and the Tank 500 publishes 800mm of wading depth where Toyota publishes no figure at all. Line-ball on the numbers, and the grade you pick matters more than the badge: only the GR Sport gets front and rear lockers.

Opinions are our own.
Your towing stays inside 3,000kg and your budget has a ceiling. Seven seats matter and you'd rather not spend $120,415 to reach them, which is where the LandCruiser's cheapest seven-seater starts. You value a 14.6-inch screen and standard leather over badge history, and you can live with a firm ride. Pick the Ultra hybrid for the front diff lock, or the Hi4-T plug-in if you charge at home and can drop to five seats.
Explore the Tank 500You tow a large van, a float or a boat near the limit. The 3,500kg braked rating and the 110-litre tank set the terms of your trip, not the purchase price, and 700Nm of diesel torque suits that job better than a petrol hybrid. Pick the GXL for the cheapest seven seats, or the GR Sport if its front and rear diff locks will genuinely earn their keep.
