BYD Sealion 7 or Geely EX5: which should you buy?

The Geely EX5 is the value pick: thousands cheaper on the road, with a longer seven-year warranty and far more roadside cover, if you can accept a smaller, less powerful car. Choose the bigger, quicker BYD Sealion 7, one of Australia's best-selling EVs, for its more premium cabin, extra space and pace, if the higher spend suits.

7yr

EX5 warranty + roadside

The cheaper Geely EX5 carries a 7-year, unlimited-kilometre warranty and 7 years of roadside assistance. The pricier BYD Sealion 7 covers 6 years or 150,000km, with just 1 year of roadside.

BYD Sealion 7 vs Geely EX5: design

BYD

The Sealion 7 wears a sleek, low-slung face with slim lighting and a wide, planted stance. At 4830mm it is the bigger, more imposing car of the two, and its genuine-leather, screen-led cabin reads as the more premium once you climb in.

Geely

The EX5 keeps a clean, calm face with slim lighting and a smooth nose, upmarket rather than showy. At 4615mm it is the more compact of the two, easier to place and park, and the look is deliberately restrained next to the larger Sealion.

The verdict

Which is better: the BYD Sealion 7 or the Geely EX5?

Pick the Sealion 7 if

you want the bigger, faster, more premium car and will pay for it. The Sealion 7 is a size up on the EX5, with a stronger 230kW base motor, a bigger 82.56kWh battery, dual-zone climate, genuine leather and a panoramic roof, head-up display and ventilated seats all standard, and it is one of Australia's best-selling EVs. Just note the $54,990 is before on-road costs in late 2026, so it lands near $60,000 driveaway, and the warranty is the shorter of the two. Buy the Premium; reviewers agree the roughly $9,000-dearer Performance adds speed most owners never use.

Pick the EX5 if

you want a five-star electric SUV for the least money on the road, with the best ownership cover. At $41,990 driveaway in late 2026 the EX5 is thousands cheaper than the Sealion once on-road costs are counted, and it adds a longer 7-year, unlimited-km warranty, 7 years of roadside, built-in navigation and stronger driver-assist scores. The cabin is plush and quiet. Accept that it is the smaller, less powerful car with a soft, floaty ride. Buy the Complete, and step up to the Inspire only for the sunroof, head-up display and ventilated seats the Sealion fits as standard.
