Geely EX5 or Kia EV5: which should you buy?

The Geely EX5 is the smarter buy for most electric-SUV shoppers: it costs less to purchase and service, uses less energy and travels further at the entry price, with a plusher cabin. Choose the Kia EV5 for its bigger boot, its optional 555km WLTP long-range battery, or all-wheel drive.

$1,190

FIVE-YEAR SERVICE BILL

Geely caps five years of scheduled EX5 servicing at $1,190 and waits 20,000km between visits; the Kia EV5 asks $2,000 across the same five years and returns to the workshop every 15,000km.

Geely EX5 vs Kia EV5: design

Geely

The EX5 wears a clean, closed-off electric face with slim LED headlights and a smooth nose, the modern EV look done without drama. On the Complete it rolls on 18-inch alloys, and the palette runs to premium finishes including a Jungle Green. At 4,615mm long and 1,901mm wide it sits squarely in the medium class, with a low, planted stance that reads more upmarket than the price.

Kia

The EV5 takes the opposite tack, with an upright, boxy SUV nose and Kia's vertical lighting signature. It looks deliberately conventional rather than futuristic, which is the point. Sharing the EX5's 4,615mm length but standing 1,715mm tall, it is the more upright of the two, and the GT-Line adds a two-tone black roof over colours such as Snow White Pearl for a slightly sportier look.

The honest take on the Geely EX5 and Kia EV5

On the Geely EX5

The Geely EX5 is the value anchor of Australia's mainstream electric SUV class, and the numbers back the badge.

On the Kia EV5

The Kia EV5 is the established value pick, the car that made a mainstream family EV feel ordinary in the best way, and it sells on sense rather than sizzle.

The verdict

Which is better: the Geely EX5 or the Kia EV5?

Pick the EX5 if

Value leads your shortlist. You want the cheapest mainstream medium EV to buy at $41,990 drive-away and the cheapest to keep, with $1,190 capped servicing over five years and 20,000km between visits. You would take the longer entry range, the more efficient motor and the bigger touchscreen, and you can live with a soft ride and a smaller seats-up boot for the money you save.

Pick the EV5 if

Space and choice matter more than the sticker. You want the 513-litre boot, the front boot for cables and the option to go all-wheel drive on the Earth or GT-Line. You would step up to the Air Long Range for its 555km, the longest range in this comparison, and you value Kia's dealer network and resale record enough to accept the higher purchase and servicing costs.
