Deepal S07 vs Geely EX5

The EX5 is the cheaper car. It opens at $41,990 driveaway in late 2026 to the Deepal S07's $47,990, a gap of about $6000, and because both are quoted driveaway the comparison is like for like. Worth knowing: the Deepal price is a run-out offer on the last of its 20-inch stock, the 19-inch version has sold out, so its figure is a sell-through price on a car near the end of its first model cycle. The EX5's is standard pricing. Confirm both are current before you buy, but on cost of entry the Geely is meaningfully the cheaper way in.

The two run the exact same outputs, 160kW and 320Nm, so this comes down to weight. The EX5 is more than 300kg lighter at 1766kg to the Deepal's 2073, and that lets it reach 100km/h in about 7.4 seconds to the S07's 7.9. Neither is a performance EV, and in daily driving both feel adequate rather than quick, with instant electric torque off the line. The Deepal sends its drive to the rear wheels for a little more traction, while the EX5 is front-driven. On the stopwatch the lighter Geely has it, but only by a whisker.

The Deepal is the bigger car and the more accommodating for everyday loading. It is longer than the EX5, and its 445-litre boot beats the Geely's 302 litres above the floor, with a handy 125-litre front boot on top that the EX5 does not have. But the EX5 has a trick of its own, a deep under-floor box that lifts usable space to about 410 litres, and with the rear seats folded it pulls clear at 1877 litres to the Deepal's 1385. So for the daily shop plus a frunk for cables the S07 carries more, while for big, folded-flat loads the EX5 is the roomier of the two.

Both hold a current five-star ANCAP rating, but they earn it differently. The Deepal is outstanding in a crash, with a standout 95 per cent adult-occupant score to the EX5's 86, but it is the weaker car on active safety, scoring 70 per cent for safety assist and 74 for vulnerable-road-user protection against the Geely's 85 and 83. That safety-assist figure was actually cut after Deepal responded to complaints about intrusive driver aids by letting owners switch them off, a fix ANCAP publicly cautioned about. The EX5 is the more balanced of the two across the four categories. If crash protection leads, the S07; if active-safety breadth does, the EX5.

The Deepal is the tow car of the two by default. It is rated to pull 1500kg braked and 750kg unbraked, which covers a small camper trailer, a box trailer or a pair of jet skis, a genuinely useful figure for a mid-size EV. Geely publishes no towing capacity for the EX5 at all, so on the record you should not hitch a trailer to it, a common position for front-drive electric SUVs. If towing is on your list, even occasionally, the S07 is the clear and only choice here.

It defined the S07's first year. At launch its driver-assistance systems, especially the driver-attention monitor, were so intrusive that one Australian outlet branded it the country's most annoying car. Deepal responded with an over-the-air software update and then a re-engineered system that let owners more easily switch the aids off. ANCAP publicly warned that the turn-it-off approach risked breaching its protocols, and while the S07 kept its five-star rating, it did so narrowly, with its safety-assist sub-score trimmed to 70 per cent. It is a car that has improved a lot since launch, but the episode is worth knowing, and the EX5's safety-assist score is the stronger of the two.

The S07 is late in its first model cycle in late 2026. Deepal has sold out of the 19-inch version, and the run-out $47,990 driveaway offer applies to the last of the 20-inch cars, which are 2025-built and available while stocks last. That means sharp pricing on a well-equipped car, and a car whose early software and safety-assist wrinkles have largely been ironed out by updates. The flip side is that you are buying the end of a debut model rather than a fresh one, and stock varies by dealer and region. If the price and equipment suit, it is a genuine bargain; just go in knowing it is a run-out. The EX5, by contrast, is standard current stock.

It comes down to what you weigh. If you want a five-star electric SUV with the same range and outputs for about $6000 less in late 2026, in a lighter, better-assisted package with built-in navigation, the EX5 is the value pick, provided you are happy with its soft, comfort-first ride. If you want the bigger, sharper-looking, better-equipped car, with a frunk, Sony audio and a real tow rating, and you will forgive its unremarkable dynamics and fiddly software, the Deepal S07 is the more car for the money, especially at run-out pricing. Decide whether price and polish or size and kit matter more, and the choice makes itself.
