The Elexio has the clear range advantage. Its 88.1kWh battery claims 562km on the WLTP cycle in base form, where the EX5's smaller 68.39kWh pack claims 475km, a difference of nearly 90km. Both figures are lab numbers, and real-world range sits below the claim for every EV, more so at highway speed. The lighter EX5 is the more efficient of the two, which claws back some of the gap in daily driving, but with more battery and more claimed range, the Elexio is the one to have for longer trips. For a typical week of commuting, either does the job comfortably between charges.

The Elexio makes the bigger statement. Its dashboard is a single 27-inch display running corner to corner, with a head-up display standard on both grades and dual-zone climate control, and reviewers rate the fit and finish as flagship-grade for a mainstream SUV. The EX5 answers with a 15.4-inch touchscreen and a 10.2-inch driver's cluster, single-zone climate, and a plush GeeLuxe-trimmed cabin reviewers still rate as upmarket, but it holds its head-up display and ventilated seats for the dearer Inspire grade. Both fit wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, built-in navigation and a 360-degree camera. The Hyundai leads on sheer screen and standard tech; the Geely is the simpler cabin to live with.

The Elexio is the only one of the two rated to tow. Hyundai quotes 1250kg braked and 750kg unbraked, enough for a small camper trailer, a box trailer or a couple of jet skis, with a 100kg tow-ball download. Geely publishes no towing rating for the EX5 at all, which in practice means it is not designed to tow. Neither is a serious tow vehicle, and 1250kg is modest next to a diesel ute, but if occasional light towing is on your list, the Hyundai is the one that can do it. For most buyers, though, this will be a footnote rather than a deciding factor.

For a family the Elexio makes the stronger practical case. Its 506-litre seats-up boot is the larger for prams and shopping, it fits nine airbags and dual-zone climate as standard, its claimed 562km range eases the school-run-plus-weekend math, and its 30,000km service intervals cut workshop trips. The EX5 is far from beaten: it is thousands cheaper to buy, carries the longer seven-year warranty and more roadside cover, fits heated front seats as standard and has the bigger folded boot for the occasional big load. If outright space and safety kit lead your list, the Hyundai is the family pick; if budget and cover lead it, the Geely makes a compelling case.

It comes down to budget against substance. If you want the cheapest way onto the road in a five-star electric SUV, with the longest warranty, the most roadside cover and a plush, quiet cabin, the EX5 is the value pick, provided you can live with less range, a smaller everyday boot and a softer ride.
