The Jaecoo J5 EV is the cheaper car, but the headline figures are not like for like. Its $36,990 is a drive-away launch offer that runs to 30 September 2026, so it already includes registration and stamp duty. The Geely EX5's $41,990 for the Complete and $45,990 for the Inspire are list prices before on-road costs, which add a few thousand dollars in most states and push a real EX5 drive-away past $45,000. Compare like for like, whether list to list or drive-away to drive-away, and the Jaecoo undercuts the Geely by a clear margin. Just remember the J5's sharpest figure is a time-limited offer. The Geely EX5 wins here. Its MY26 update brought a bigger battery, good for 475km WLTP in the base Complete and 450km in the Inspire. The Jaecoo J5 EV uses a smaller pack rated at 402km WLTP. That is a real gap of around 70km on the base cars, and reviewers note both fall short of their claims in the real world, as most EVs do. For city and suburban driving either is comfortably enough for a week of commuting between charges. For regular longer trips, the Geely's extra range and bigger battery give it useful headroom. The Geely takes it on range.

The Geely EX5 holds a five-star ANCAP rating from 2025 testing. It scored 86 per cent for adult occupant protection and 87 per cent for children, and the rating applies to every variant. The Jaecoo J5 EV has not been crash-tested by ANCAP and carries no rating, though the brand says it is confident of five stars if tested. Both cars come with seven airbags and the same list of active-safety features as standard, including AEB, lane keeping and blind-spot monitoring. If an independent, tested result matters to you, the Geely is the safer known quantity. The Geely takes it.

On the Geely, you step up to the dearer Inspire for the panoramic roof and cooled seats. The Geely answers with bigger screens, a 15.4-inch central touchscreen and a 10.2-inch driver display against the Jaecoo's 13.2-inch and 8.88-inch units, and it adds built-in satellite navigation. Both offer wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. For sheer standard kit at the price, the Jaecoo wins.

The Geely EX5 is the larger car and the roomier one inside. It is 235mm longer with a 130mm longer wheelbase, and folding the rear seats opens up 1,877 litres of space, well clear of the compact Jaecoo. Behind the rear seats, though, the Jaecoo holds its own. The two makers quote boot space on different bases, so the raw figures are not directly comparable, but measured like for like the J5 EV is competitive with the Geely up to the load cover. Neither has a spare wheel; both use a tyre-repair kit. For outright space the Geely wins; for a surprisingly practical small boot the Jaecoo impresses.

It is closer than the headline figures suggest. The Jaecoo J5 EV peaks at 130kW on DC fast charging against the Geely EX5's lower peak, so on paper it looks quicker. In practice the Geely quotes a 30 to 80 per cent top-up in about 20 minutes, while the Jaecoo quotes around 28 minutes for the same window, because peak power is only held briefly and the EX5's charging curve holds up well. Both take AC charging at around 11kW for home and destination top-ups. So the Jaecoo has the bigger number, but the Geely is no slower where it counts, and it has more range to begin with. Call this one a draw.

Both cars are inexpensive to keep and generously covered. The Jaecoo J5 EV carries an eight-year, unlimited-kilometre warranty with eight years of roadside assistance, a year longer than the Geely EX5's seven-year vehicle warranty and roadside cover. Both back the battery for eight years. Service intervals are identical at 12 months or 20,000km, longer between visits than many rivals. Geely quotes about $1,190 for five years of scheduled servicing on a capped-price plan. As electric SUVs, both sidestep fuel, so running costs come down to charging, tyres and insurance. For a first electric car chosen on price, the Jaecoo J5 EV is the natural pick. Its drive-away launch offer, live until 30 September 2026, keeps the on-road cost low and certain, it comes loaded with the kind of equipment you would expect to pay more for, and the eight-year warranty takes some of the risk out of buying a young brand. For city and suburban driving its 402km of range is more than enough between charges. The Geely EX5 makes the stronger case for a budget family that still wants room and a tested safety rating, but it costs more once on-road costs are added. Budget-first buyers should start with the Jaecoo.

For a family, the Geely EX5 is the more complete choice. It is the larger car with a roomier back seat, a much bigger boot with the seats folded and a five-star ANCAP rating that many parents will want on the shortlist. Its longer range also suits the weekend trips a family car ends up doing. The Jaecoo J5 EV is a strong family option too, with standard dual-zone climate, a panoramic roof, ventilated seats and the longer warranty, and for a smaller household it may be all the car you need. But when space, range and the tested safety result are the priorities, the Geely earns its premium. The Geely takes it for families.
