Hyundai Ioniq 5 vs Subaru Uncharted

They sit on different architectures and pitch at different buyers. The Hyundai Ioniq 5 uses an 800-volt E-GMP platform built for space and fast charging, with a long wheelbase, a big boot and a 10-to-80 DC stop of about 18 minutes. The Subaru Uncharted rides on the Toyota-Subaru electric platform as a smaller, sportier, all-wheel-drive car with more power, higher clearance and a lower price. The Ioniq 5 is the roomier, longer-range, faster-charging all-rounder; the Uncharted is the cheaper, punchier, more capable-in-the-wet alternative. Your choice hinges on space and charging against price and traction.

The Subaru Uncharted is cheaper up front. Its single all-wheel-drive grade is $65,420 drive-away against the base Hyundai Ioniq 5 RWD's $69,990, about $4,570 less, and both are quoted drive-away for a NSW private buyer in September 2026. What the extra Hyundai money buys is a longer seven-year warranty, a service interval twice as long at 30,000km or two years, and more space and range. So the Uncharted wins on the sticker, while the Ioniq 5 argues it is cheaper to live with over time. If the lowest price leads, the Subaru is the pick.

The Hyundai Ioniq 5 charges far faster on DC, while the Uncharted answers at home. On DC fast charging the Ioniq 5's 800-volt architecture claims a 10-to-80 per cent stop in about 18 minutes, where the Subaru Uncharted takes around 30, a big difference on a road trip. At home the result flips: the Uncharted charges at up to 22kW on three-phase AC, faster than the Ioniq 5's 10.5kW. For most buyers the DC speed matters more, and there the Hyundai wins clearly. If your charging is mostly overnight on a three-phase home supply, the Subaru narrows the gap.

The base rear-drive Hyundai Ioniq 5 claims 570km WLTP, ahead of the Subaru Uncharted's 522, helped by a larger 84kWh battery against the Subaru's 74.7. The all-wheel-drive Ioniq 5 N Line Premium drops to 495km, below the Uncharted, so the longest-range car here is specifically the rear-drive Hyundai. The Uncharted's 522km is competitive and enough for most, and its all-wheel-drive layout is part of why it trails on paper. For maximum range you buy the base Ioniq 5; for all-wheel drive with strong range, the Uncharted holds up well.

The Subaru Uncharted, against the base Hyundai. Its dual motors make 252kW and 437Nm for a sprint to 100km/h of about five seconds, where the entry rear-drive Ioniq 5 makes 168kW. Hyundai does offer quicker versions, a 239kW all-wheel-drive N Line Premium and the halo Ioniq 5 N, but both cost far more than the Uncharted. Comparing the cars most buyers cross-shop, the all-wheel-drive Subaru is the quicker and more sure-footed. The Ioniq 5's case rests on space, charging and range rather than outright pace at the entry price.

The Hyundai Ioniq 5, comfortably. Its 3,000mm wheelbase is 250mm longer than the Uncharted's, and the flat-floored cabin and sliding rear bench turn that into limousine-like back-seat space. Its 520-litre boot dwarfs the coupe-styled Subaru's 403, a 117-litre advantage for luggage or a pram. Both seat five, but the Ioniq 5 simply packages more room for passengers and cargo. The Uncharted trades that space for a lower, sportier shape and all-wheel-drive hardware. If space is the priority the Ioniq 5 is the clear pick; the Subaru answers on price and traction.

Both hold a five-star ANCAP rating and match on adult occupant protection at 88 per cent, but the ratings come from different tests and the sub-scores split. The Hyundai Ioniq 5 scores higher on safety assist, 89 per cent to 82, and marginally on child occupant, 87 to 86. The newer Subaru Uncharted rating is much stronger on vulnerable road user protection, 80 per cent to the Ioniq 5's 63. Both run the full active-safety suite, including autonomous emergency braking, lane keep assist and blind-spot monitoring. Neither is a weak link, but the Subaru's newer test gives it the edge on pedestrian protection while the Hyundai leads on driver-assist.

The Subaru Uncharted on both counts. It is rated to tow 2,000kg braked against the Hyundai Ioniq 5's 1,600, and its standard symmetrical all-wheel drive, X-Mode and 211mm of clearance make it far more confident on gravel, snow and wet roads than the rear-drive Ioniq 5 on 160mm. Neither is a proper off-roader, and towing will cut range on either, but if a trailer or all-weather grip is part of the plan the Subaru has the clear edge. The Ioniq 5's strengths are range, charging and cabin space rather than traction or towing capacity.

The Hyundai Ioniq 5 has the stronger ownership headline. It carries a seven-year warranty to the Subaru Uncharted's five, and is serviced every 30,000km or two years, twice the Subaru's 15,000km and 12-month interval, so it visits the workshop half as often. The Uncharted counters with genuinely cheap capped-price servicing, under $1,000 across five years, and its own established network. Both cover the battery for eight years. For lowest hassle and longest cover the Ioniq 5 leads; for the cheapest individual service visit and a lower purchase price, the Uncharted stays competitive.
