Jaecoo J5 EV or Kia EV5: which should you buy?

For most buyers the Jaecoo J5 EV is the smarter spend: it costs around $13,000 less on the road, brings more standard equipment and a longer warranty, and matches the cheapest Kia EV5 on range. Choose the EV5 when you want the bigger cabin, a five-star safety rating and the long-range grade the Jaecoo cannot match.

$13,000

THE STRETCH-UP GAP

The cheapest Kia EV5, the Air Standard Range, lands about $13,000 above the Jaecoo J5 EV's $36,990 drive-away launch offer (to 30 September 2026). Yet that entry Kia's 400km doesn't top the Jaecoo's 402km; the 555km version costs more again.

Jaecoo J5 EV vs Kia EV5: design

Jaecoo

From the front three-quarter, the Jaecoo leans hard on its boxy, upright stance and the squared-off lighting that has earned it a small-Range-Rover nickname. The upright nose, flat bonnet and blocky wheel arches give a compact car a surprisingly planted, rugged look, and the full-length glass roof is visible over the shoulder line. It reads more expensive than it is.

Kia

The Kia EV5's front three-quarter is all mainstream confidence: the vertical Star Map lighting signature, a clean closed nose and the longer bonnet of a genuine mid-size SUV. Where the Jaecoo plays rugged, the Kia plays familiar and grown-up, closer to a scaled-down EV9 than anything experimental. The two-tone black roof on the GT-Line sharpens the flagship's stance.

The honest take on the Jaecoo J5 EV and Kia EV5

On the Jaecoo J5 EV

The verdict

Which is better: the Jaecoo J5 EV or the Kia EV5?

Pick the J5 EV if

Your budget is firm and the drive-away price leads the decision. Most of your driving is around town and the suburbs, where 402km covers a week with room to spare. You want the long equipment list, the glass roof and the ventilated seats without paying up for a flagship grade. And you value an eight-year warranty as a hedge on a newer brand more than you worry about the missing crash rating.

Pick the EV5 if

You want the bigger car and will use the extra rear-seat and boot space rather than pay for size you do not need. A tested five-star safety score on the car you put the family in is non-negotiable. You do enough longer trips that the Air Long Range's 555km earns its money over the base grade. And you would rather buy an established badge with a proven dealer network and a known resale story.
