Only in its dearer grades. The Jaecoo J5 EV is rated at 402km WLTP, and the entry Kia EV5 Air Standard Range claims 400km, so at the sharp end of the price list the two are line-ball. The gap only opens with the Air Long Range and its larger 88.1kWh battery, which lifts the claim to 555km, with the all-wheel-drive Earth and GT-Line at 500 and 470km. Reviewers report the Standard Range does closer to 350km in the real world. Read the Kia as the longer-legged car only from the Long Range up. Below that, call it even.

On independent testing the Kia EV5 is ahead, and clearly so. The Kia EV5 is the larger vehicle in every dimension that matters. It measures 4,615mm long on a 2,750mm wheelbase, against the Jaecoo's 4,380mm and 2,620mm, and that space reaches the cabin and the cargo bay. The EV5 holds 513 litres behind the rear seats, expanding to 1,714 litres folded, and adds a 67-litre front boot for cables. The Jaecoo quotes 480 litres behind its rear seats and is the roomier-feeling small SUV, but it is still a size down. Read the Kia as the family hauler, and the Jaecoo as the right-sized city car for one or two people.

The Jaecoo J5 EV comes one way, and it is generous. Its single Summit grade bundles dual-zone climate, a panoramic glass roof, front seats that heat and cool, ambient lighting, a 360-degree camera and wireless charging. The Kia EV5 splits that kit across four grades. The base Air gets you the safety suite, the twin 12.3-inch screens and built-in navigation as standard, but a sunroof, ventilated seats, head-up display and 360-degree camera wait for the flagship GT-Line. Both are inexpensive to keep, with a slight split in emphasis. The Jaecoo J5 EV is covered for eight years with no distance cap, the battery included, and services fall due every 20,000km or 12 months, adding up to a little over $1,500 across that period. The Kia EV5 counters with seven years and unlimited kilometres, a separate seven-year, 150,000km battery warranty, capped-price servicing around $400 a visit at 15,000km intervals, and eight years of roadside assistance. Read the Jaecoo as the longer-covered car, and the Kia as the one with the more transparent capped-price menu. Neither will cost much to run.

Neither is a driver's car, and both attract the same kind of note from Australian reviewers. The Jaecoo J5 EV is criticised for light, feel-free steering, regenerative braking that grabs rather than blends, and a cabin burying key controls in its touchscreen, though the ride is settled enough around town. The Kia EV5 feels more polished in its base Air form, but the heavier dual-motor Earth and GT-Line draw comments about a wobbly, less resolved ride, and it charges more slowly than 800-volt rivals.
