The Land Rover Discovery is the more capable, more spacious seven-seat tourer, with the bigger off-road envelope, a real adult third row and far better economy. The Lexus GX is the pick when proven Toyota-group reliability, resale and a quieter ownership story matter more than outright reach, and for any buyer wary of Land Rover's record.
490km
On their official combined figures the diesel Discovery covers close to 1,140km on its 89-litre tank; the petrol Lexus GX manages about 650km from 80 litres. That is roughly 490km more between fills, and the real-world gap runs wider.
Pick a priority — we’ll show the numbers that matter and tell you which car we’d choose.

900 mm (leads) | Wading depth | 700 mm |
Off-road the surprise is the Discovery, not the GX. Its air suspension lifts it to 285mm of clearance, a 33.6-degree approach, a 30-degree departure and 900mm of wading, past the ladder-frame GX's 220mm, 26 degrees, 22 degrees and 700mm on every axis. Both run full-time four-wheel drive; the GX answers with a standard low range and Toyota durability, where the Discovery's most serious low-range gear can be a cost option on some grades. The Discovery wins the envelope on paper, the GX the hardware you never think about.
Based on Off-road, we’d pick the Land Rover Discovery.

|---|---|---|
3,500 kg | Braked towing | 3,500 kg |
3,245 kg (leads) | GVM | 3,150 kg |
Both are rated to 3,500kg braked and 750kg unbraked at the grades most buyers choose, so the headline ties. The detail leans marginally to the Discovery, which holds the full 3,500kg across its range and carries a slightly higher gross combination mass, 6,745kg to the GX's 6,650, where the 22-inch GX Sports Luxury eases to 3,130kg braked. Both have the mass and driveline for a serious van; plan around combined mass if you tow near the limit, and the volume grades are a dead heat.
A genuine tie.
Both cars handle towing & weightsequally well — this one’s a draw.

700 Nm (leads) | Torque | 650 Nm |
7.8 L/100km (leads) | Fuel economy | 12.3 L/100km |
Performance splits on character. The GX's 3.5-litre twin-turbo petrol V6 makes 260kW and 650Nm through a 10-speed auto, rated in AU road tests for smoothness and punch, the livelier daily drive. The Discovery's 3.0-litre diesel six makes 257kW and a stronger 700Nm, and dispatches 0-100km/h in a claimed 6.3 seconds, the more effortless long-hauler. The petrol is the more charismatic engine, the diesel the more relaxed tourer with more low-down pull. Read it as the polish against the pull, and take your pick.
A genuine tie.

7.8 L/100km (leads) | Fuel economy | 12.3 L/100km |
Value is the GX's category. On 2026 pricing it opens marginally cheaper at $130,586, packs its whole range into a tight band to $143,917, and hands you almost no options list to inflate the price, where the Discovery's can add tens of thousands. Add a Toyota-group resale record the Discovery cannot match. The Discovery answers with more standard capability and space for the money. On predictable spend and five-year worth, though, the GX takes it.
Based on Running costs, we’d pick the Lexus GX.

Yes | 360° camera | Yes |
The safety story is an honest wash. Neither has a current ANCAP rating: the Discovery's 2017 five-star expired at the end of 2023, and the GX has never been tested. Both fit autonomous emergency braking, lane-keep assist, adaptive cruise control, blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert as standard. The GX adds a ninth airbag and pedestrian detection; the Discovery adds a driver attention monitor and automatic high beam. A buyer who needs a current, independent crash score will find neither can supply one, which is the honest reason to cross-shop a freshly rated rival.

7 | Seats | 7 |
1,137 L (leads) | Boot | 171 L |
11.4″ | Touchscreen | 14.0″ (leads) |
Both carry seven, but the Discovery carries them better. AU road tests rate its third row as genuinely adult-usable and covered by the curtain airbags, a trait few seven-seat SUVs manage, and it pairs that with the bigger boot. The GX seats seven only in the Luxury and Sports Luxury, with a third row that reads as occasional-use, and its off-road Overtrail drops to five seats. The GX's counter is proven reliability and a ninth airbag. The Discovery is the roomier family default if you can carry the reliability question.
Based on Everyday & family, we’d pick the Land Rover Discovery.
Up front the Discovery is upright and rounded, its softer monocoque shape and slim lamps reading more premium family wagon than hardcore off-roader, an appearance the numbers underneath quietly contradict. The heritage Gemini and Tempest editions add contrast roofs and unique wheels.
Beside the softer Discovery the GX looks the committed off-roader, its full Lexus spindle grille set into a tall, square nose with a high, chin-free bumper that clears the approach. It reads more overtly premium than the platform-sharing Prado, and more upright than the rounded Land Rover.

The Discovery is the quietly capable one, and the numbers back the reputation.
The GX is Lexus badging over Toyota's most serious off-road hardware, and that is the whole proposition.

Opinions are our own.
You need a seven-seat tourer with the bigger off-road envelope and real economy, and you can carry Land Rover's reliability question. The Discovery's air suspension gives it more clearance, deeper wading and better geometry than the GX on every figure, its diesel six sips 7.8L/100km and tours far between fills, and its third row takes adults. Pick the entry S at $132,376 driveaway for the value way in, since it wants for nothing the dearer grades add in capability, and hold the build back from the options list that turns a $132,000 Discovery into a $150,000 one.
Explore the DiscoveryProven Toyota-group hardware, resale and a predictable ownership record are what you are buying, over the Discovery's outright reach. The GX puts its Prado and LandCruiser underpinnings, a full-time four-wheel-drive system with a lockable centre diff and standard low range, and a strong, smooth petrol V6 behind that case, at tight pricing with servicing you can read off a list at $695 a visit. The seven-seat Luxury is the value entry at $130,586 driveaway on 2026 pricing; move to the Overtrail for the all-terrain hardware if you can live with five seats and the fuel bill.
