Audi's smallest electric SUV is also its most sensible. The Q4 e-tron landed in Australia in December 2024, four years after its global debut, and it arrived with the timing worked out: the upgraded MY25 battery, sharper pricing, and the rear-drive entry car doing something unusual for a lineup like this. The cheapest Q4, the rear-wheel-drive 45, travels furthest on a charge. Built on the Volkswagen Group's MEB platform, the Q4 trades the outright charging speed of the newest rivals for a genuinely premium cabin, a tidy city footprint and Audi's easiest way into an electric car.

The Q4 e-tron is Audi's entry into electric motoring, a premium compact SUV pitched below the larger Q6 e-tron and squarely at buyers stepping out of a petrol A3 or Q3. Two grades reach Australia, both five-seat SUVs, and as of 2026 they run from $84,900 for the rear-wheel-drive 45 e-tron to $105,900 for the dual-motor 55 e-tron quattro, both before on-road costs. The surprise sits at the bottom of the range, where the cheaper car is also the one that goes furthest between charges.
For most buyers the 45 e-tron is the whole argument. It claims 524km of WLTP range from its 82kWh battery, the longest figure in the local Q4 range, and it does that while undercutting the quattro by twenty-one thousand dollars. The ownership case backs it up. Audi covers the car for five years with unlimited kilometres and the battery for eight years or 160,000km, and the 45's price slips under the luxury car tax threshold for electric vehicles, which also opens the door to the fringe benefits tax break on a novated lease. Energy use of 174 to 181 watt-hours per kilometre keeps home charging cheap.
The 55 e-tron quattro is the car for buyers who want traction and pace. A second motor on the front axle lifts combined output to 250kW, drops the 0 to 100km/h sprint to 5.4 seconds against the 45's 6.7, and raises braked towing to 1200kg from 1000. It adds a power-adjustable driver's seat, a heated steering wheel and twenty-inch wheels. The trade-offs are real: range falls to 488km, and as of 2026 its $105,900 list price sits close enough to the larger, newer Q6 e-tron to make the step up worth a look.
Underneath, the Q4 rides on the Volkswagen Group's MEB architecture, shared with the VW ID.4, Skoda Enyaq and Cupra Tavascan, and it shows both the strengths and the age of that platform. The cabin is the strength: tri-zone climate, leather trim, a 12.3-inch digital cockpit and interior space that belies the compact badge. The age shows in the 400-volt electrical system, which tops out at 175kW on DC and takes about 28 minutes to charge from 10 to 80 per cent, competitive but no longer class-leading against 800-volt rivals. As a first electric Audi it is well resolved and easy to live with, and we would take the 45 e-tron without hesitation.

At $105,900, a second front motor adds quattro all-wheel drive and lifts combined output to 250kW, cutting the sprint to 5.4 seconds and raising braked towing to 1200kg. You also gain a power driver's seat, heated steering wheel and twenty-inch wheels, but range drops to 488km.

Buy the Q4 e-tron 45 if you want a premium electric SUV that is easy to live with and cheap to run, and skip the quattro unless all-wheel-drive traction really matters to you. The rear-drive 45 is the pick: it is the cheapest Q4 and the longest-legged, and at a 2026 list price of $84,900 it lands under the tax line that trips up dearer rivals. Cross-shop it against the Mercedes-Benz EQA and BMW iX1 if badge and cabin lead your brief, or the Tesla Model Y if outright value and charging speed matter more than finish. The Q4 counters with a better-resolved interior and Audi's ownership backing. Just know the 400-volt platform charges slower than 800-volt cars like the Hyundai Ioniq 5, so if rapid top-ups are central, shop wider.

The Q4 e-tron has a short history. Audi revealed it globally in 2021 as its first model built from the ground up for the compact class as an electric car, part of the wider e-tron rollout. Australia did not get it straight away, and the version sold here is a deliberately later, upgraded car.
The Q4 e-tron and its Sportback sibling launched internationally on the Volkswagen Group's MEB platform, sharing hardware with the VW ID.4 and Skoda Enyaq. Early cars used a 77kWh battery and charged at up to 135kW on DC.
Audi chose to skip the earlier car locally and launch with the MY25 update instead, fitting the larger 82kWh battery with optimised cell chemistry and lifting DC charging to 175kW. Prices were cut by up to $3310 before the first deliveries to sharpen the value case.
