The Land Rover Defender is the pick for most buyers who want one vehicle to do everything: air-suspension refinement, a current five-star safety rating, and a range spanning diesel to V8. The INEOS Grenadier suits the buyer who genuinely goes bush and wants an analogue, mechanically simple tool with real diff-lock hardware over electronics.
1,152 L
Behind the second row the INEOS Grenadier holds 1,152 litres to the Land Rover Defender 110's 972, so the boxy, analogue one out-carries the plusher SUV by 180 litres for a weekly shop or a touring load.

Value is a genuine toss-up. At 2026 pricing the two open within about $1,200, near $113,000 driveaway, but spend that money differently. The Defender diesel gives far more equipment, safety and refinement for the entry price, then risks it on an options list that adds $20,000 to $30,000 and resale that trails Toyota. The Grenadier gives you exactly what is on the sticker, capped at $127,485, but with uncapped servicing and a thin dealer network. More car, or fewer surprises: we call it a tie.

Safety is the clearest gap here. The Defender holds a five-star ANCAP rating with autonomous emergency braking, lane keep assist, blind-spot monitoring and a 360-degree camera standard, though the rating dates to 2020, covers only the non-V8 110, and lapses at the end of 2026. The Grenadier carries no ANCAP rating, because its 3,550kg gross vehicle mass falls outside the testing remit, and INEOS Australia fits no autonomous braking. For a current, independent crash score and active safety, the Defender takes it.
Based on Safety, we’d pick the Land Rover Defender.

The Land Rover Defender is the better family car — more practical space and the small details that matter day-to-day. The INEOS INEOS Grenadier Station Wagon isn't unfamily — just not as purpose-built for it.
Based on Everyday & family, we’d pick the Land Rover Defender.
Head-on the Grenadier makes no attempt to hide what it is: a flat, upright nose, round headlights and a boxy, riveted body in galvanised steel, with a utility belt and exposed fixings that are function first and styling second. It is unmistakable in traffic and pure purpose on a track. The MY26 update kept the look and added a cosmetic Black Edition.
The Defender's face is calmer and more premium than the Grenadier's: short overhangs, round LED headlights set into a smooth, upright nose, and body-colour panels where the INEOS wears rivets and an exposed utility belt. It signals its off-road intent through proportion rather than hardware on show. The MY26 refresh tidied the lights and darkened the trim.

There is little else on an Australian price list like the Grenadier, and that is the pitch.
The Defender is the widest single nameplate in the class.

Opinions are our own.
You regularly go bush and want an analogue, mechanically simple 4WD you can work and repair yourself. The beam axles, up to three hand-operated diff locks and the BMW straight-six earn their keep off the blacktop, and the big square boot and 7,000kg combined mass suit a serious touring load. Take the Trialmaster for its front and rear locks at the same price as the comfort Fieldmaster, and the diesel for range. Accept the firm ride, the missing safety rating and LandCruiser 300 money.
Explore the INEOS Grenadier Station WagonYou want one vehicle to cover the school run, a 3,500kg caravan and a factory off-roader, with on-road refinement the Grenadier cannot match. The air-suspension ride, class-leading Pivi Pro cabin, current five-star safety and a range from diesel to plug-in to V8 are the argument. The diesel 110 D250 is the sensible way in near $115,242 at 2026 pricing, and the 257kW D350 the sweet spot. Read the recall history, and lock the build before the options run the price away.
