Subaru Trailseeker vs Toyota bZ4X

For a front-drive car the Toyota bZ4X is cheaper: its 2WD opens at $61,320 drive-away, thousands under the Subaru Trailseeker's $69,620, and claims more range too. But the moment you want all-wheel drive the maths inverts. The bZ4X AWD costs $73,920 drive-away, more than the Subaru, and gives up both range and power to it. Both cars are quoted drive-away for a NSW private buyer, so the comparison is clean. If front-wheel drive suits you the bZ4X wins on price; if you need all-wheel drive the Subaru is both cheaper and stronger.

The front-drive Toyota bZ4X 2WD claims 591km WLTP, ahead of the all-wheel-drive Subaru Trailseeker's 533km. Both draw on the same 74.7kWh battery, so the lighter, more efficient Toyota does more with the same energy. The picture changes with the bZ4X AWD, which drops to 517km WLTP, below the Subaru. So the longest-range car here is specifically the front-drive bZ4X; among the all-wheel-drive versions, the Trailseeker leads on both range and power. For maximum range overall you buy the bZ4X 2WD; for the longest all-wheel-drive range, the Subaru is the answer.

Both hold a five-star ANCAP rating from 2025, and the sub-scores all but match. The Toyota bZ4X scores 88 per cent for adult occupants with eight airbags; the Subaru Trailseeker scores 89. Both post 86 per cent for child occupants, 80 per cent for vulnerable road users and 82 per cent for safety assist. Both cars run the full active-safety suite, including autonomous emergency braking (AEB), lane keep assist, adaptive cruise control and blind-spot monitoring. Given the shared platform the results track as closely as expected, so safety is a dead heat.

Both the Subaru Trailseeker and the Toyota bZ4X peak at 150kW on DC fast charging, so on paper they look level. In practice the Subaru is quicker: it claims a 10-to-80 per cent charge in 30 minutes against the bZ4X's 45, a 15-minute difference that adds up on a long drive. Both also charge on AC at home for overnight top-ups. Neither matches the 800-volt rivals in the class that halve the DC stop, but between these two platform relatives the Subaru is the faster refill on a road trip.

The Subaru Trailseeker is comfortably the quicker car. Its twin motors make 280kW for a 4.5-second run to 100km/h, where the front-drive Toyota bZ4X 2WD makes 167kW and takes 7.4 seconds. Even the dual-motor bZ4X AWD, at 252kW, trails the Subaru on both power and pace. The Trailseeker also drives all four wheels as standard, where the value bZ4X drives only the fronts. If straight-line pace and all-wheel traction matter, the Subaru wins clearly; the Toyota's case is range and price rather than performance.

The Subaru Trailseeker is the more capable of these platform relatives. It runs permanent symmetrical all-wheel drive on both grades and adds dual X-Mode with hill-descent control, where the value Toyota bZ4X 2WD drives only its front wheels. Both clear about 211mm, so ground clearance is line-ball, and neither is a serious off-roader, with a puncture kit in place of a spare on both. But for gravel roads, snow and wet-weather grip, the Subaru's standard all-wheel drive is the difference. The bZ4X needs its dearer AWD grade just to match the Subaru's traction.

The Subaru Trailseeker holds 609 litres behind the second row against the Toyota bZ4X's 452, a useful 157-litre advantage for luggage, prams or camp gear. Both seat five and share the platform's cabin dimensions, so passenger room is similar. The Subaru's wagon-style tail simply packages more cargo space than the bZ4X's more conventional SUV shape. If boot space is a priority, the Trailseeker is the clear pick; the bZ4X answers on range and price rather than outright cargo practicality, so the split is clean.

If all-wheel drive is a must, the Subaru Trailseeker is the better buy. It undercuts the Toyota bZ4X AWD on drive-away price, and does more with the money: 280kW against 252kW, 533km WLTP against 517km, and a quicker 30-minute charge against 45. The bZ4X AWD's counters are Toyota's connected services and network, and both hold a five-star ANCAP. But on the core all-wheel-drive numbers, price, power, range and charging, the Subaru leads. For an all-wheel-drive electric SUV at this money, the Trailseeker is the stronger pick.

If you do not need all-wheel drive, the front-drive Toyota bZ4X 2WD is the smarter buy. It costs thousands less than the Subaru Trailseeker, claims the longest range in this pair at 591km WLTP, matches the Subaru's five-star ANCAP with eight airbags, and brings connected services and Toyota's dealer network. You give up pace, quicker charging and a bigger boot, and you drive only the front wheels. But for a family that stays on sealed roads and wants maximum range for the least money, the bZ4X 2WD makes more sense than paying up for the Subaru's all-wheel drive.
