Subaru Trailseeker or Toyota bZ4X: which should you buy?

The choice comes down to all-wheel drive. Pick the Toyota bZ4X for the longest range, the Toyota network and the lowest price, if front-wheel drive suits you. Both hold a five-star ANCAP. Pick the Subaru Trailseeker for standard all-wheel drive, more power, faster charging and a bigger boot, and note it also undercuts the bZ4X's own all-wheel-drive grade.

591km

bZ4X range, front-drive base

The front-drive Toyota bZ4X claims 591km WLTP, further than the all-wheel-drive Subaru Trailseeker's 533km, from the same 74.7kWh battery. The catch: the cheaper Toyota base drives only its front wheels.

The verdict

Which is better: the Subaru Trailseeker or the Toyota bZ4X?

Pick the Trailseeker if

You want all-wheel drive, and the pace and traction that come with it: 280kW, a 4.5-second sprint and symmetrical AWD across the range. You value faster charging, 30 minutes to the Toyota's 45, and a bigger 609-litre boot. Note the Subaru's AWD grade undercuts the bZ4X's own AWD while offering more range and power, so it is the better all-wheel-drive buy.

Pick the bZ4X if

You want the longest range for the least money and do not need all-wheel drive. The front-drive 2WD claims 591km WLTP at the lowest price here, matches the Subaru's five-star ANCAP with eight airbags, and adds connected services and the country's largest dealer network. Pick the 2WD for range and value; step to the AWD only if you need traction and will pay more than the Subaru.
