Neither is quick by 2026 standards, where 800-volt rivals such as the Zeekr 7X halve the DC stop. If road-trip charging speed is your priority, both twins fall short of the newest rivals, and picking between these two comes down to price, range and equipment instead.

On the road the Subaru earns the nod. Both cars use the same running gear, but Subaru fits its own suspension tune, and AU launch reviews consistently rate the Trailseeker the more settled and composed of the twins on local roads. The Toyota is not poor, it simply rides to a more conservative, comfort-first calibration. Neither is a sports SUV, and both trade some ride polish for the 211mm of clearance. If ride and handling on Australian surfaces sway you, the Subaru is the pick; if you weight the badge and network higher, the Toyota closes the gap.

On value the base Subaru Trailseeker AWD makes the stronger case. It costs thousands less drive-away than the single-spec Toyota, claims 45km more range, and carries the AU-tuned ride reviewers prefer. The catch is equipment and reassurance. That base grade skips the Touring's ventilated seats and panoramic roof, and the Subaru range has no connected services. The Toyota answers with over-the-air updates and the bigger network, and both twins hold a five-star ANCAP. If the numbers decide it, the base Trailseeker wins; if you want the loaded spec, the bZ4X Touring earns its premium.

For a family taking its first EV step, the Toyota bZ4X Touring makes the more complete case. It pairs its five-star ANCAP and eight airbags with connected services and over-the-air updates, and rides on the largest dealer and service network in the country, which matters when something needs fixing. The Subaru Trailseeker answers with a lower entry price, more claimed range and the ride reviewers prefer, and matches the Toyota's five-star ANCAP, though it goes without connected tech. Families who value the network and the tech lean Toyota; those who weight price, range and ride lean Subaru.
