Jeep Wrangler vs Land Rover Defender: design

Jeep

The Wrangler wears the most recognisable face in off-roading: the seven-slot grille, round headlights and flat, upright screen that have defined the Jeep for decades. In Rubicon trim it adds chunky all-terrain tyres, red tow hooks and a purposeful stance. Nothing signals intent like it, and the removable doors and roof mean the whole thing can open to the elements. It looks like exactly what it is, a trail machine first.

Land Rover

The Defender's front is unmistakable but understated next to the Jeep: a near-square grille, round LED lamps and a flat bonnet that reference the classic Defender without mimicking it. In entry 110 S trim the detailing is plainer than the pricier grades, yet the shape still looks premium and deliberate. Against the Wrangler's raw, iconic face, the Land Rover's is the more designed and grown-up of the two.

Editorial

The honest take on the Jeep Wrangler and Land Rover Defender

On the Jeep Wrangler

The Wrangler Rubicon Unlimited is the cheapest and most single-minded off-roader here, and that is the whole point.

On the Land Rover Defender

The Defender 110 S is the entry to its own range, and it still costs tens of thousands more than the flagship Wrangler, so the case for it rests on refinement.

The verdict

Which is better: the Jeep Wrangler or the Land Rover Defender?

Pick the Wrangler if

Maximum factory off-road hardware, open-air character and the lower price matter more to you than a safety rating or on-road refinement. You want the front and rear diff locks, the sway-bar disconnect, the 77.2:1 crawl ratio and the 43.9-degree approach angle, plus a roof and doors that come off, and you accept the unrated safety, the thirsty petrol and the firm ride to have them for far less money.

Pick the Defender if

A five-star safety rating, refinement, diesel efficiency and 3500kg towing matter more to you than extreme off-road hardware or the lower price. You want the torquey inline-six diesel, the independent-suspension ride, the bigger boot, the 13.1-inch screen and five years of roadside, plus the breadth to daily and tour, and you will pay tens of thousands more than the flagship Wrangler to have it.
