Deepal S07 vs Jaecoo J5 EV

On current drive-away offers the Jaecoo J5 EV undercuts the Deepal by about $11,000. It is priced from around $36,990 drive-away as a launch offer that has effectively become its standing price, while the Deepal S07 sits near $47,990 drive-away as run-out stock, down from its $53,900 launch list price. Both figures include on-road costs, so it is a fair like-for-like. The Jaecoo also carries the longer warranty and roadside cover, so the gap widens once you factor in ownership. The Deepal gives you more car for the extra money, but it is unquestionably the dearer buy here.

The Deepal S07 goes further on paper, with a 475km WLTP range against the Jaecoo J5 EV's 402km. The Deepal's advantage comes from a much larger 79.97kWh battery, where the Jaecoo uses a 58.9kWh lithium iron phosphate pack. That 73km gap matters most if you regularly drive beyond the suburbs or want a buffer against range anxiety. In everyday use both cars land somewhat below their claims, as all EVs do, and the Jaecoo's 402km still covers a typical week comfortably. If maximum range is the priority, the Deepal takes it; if your driving is mostly local, the difference fades.

Surprisingly, the cheaper and smaller-battery Jaecoo J5 EV is the faster charger. It accepts up to 130kW on a DC fast-charger and completes a 30 to 80 per cent top-up in around 28 minutes. The larger, more expensive Deepal S07 peaks at just 92kW despite its bigger battery, and takes closer to 35 minutes for the same top-up. Reviewers regularly flag the Deepal's DC speed as behind the pace for the class. On AC the two are line-ball at 11kW versus 10.3kW. For anyone who charges on the road often, the Jaecoo is the easier car to live with.

The Deepal S07 is the larger vehicle overall. At 4,750mm long on a 2,900mm wheelbase it is a full mid-size SUV, where the 4,380mm Jaecoo J5 EV is a compact, so the Deepal has more rear-seat space. It also adds a 125-litre front boot and a 1,385-litre load bay with the rear seats folded. The Jaecoo hits back with the bigger boot behind the second row, at 480 litres to the Deepal's 445. So the Deepal wins on outright room and load flexibility, while the Jaecoo is roomier where it counts for daily shopping runs and easier to park.

Only the Deepal S07 has an independent crash rating. It scored five stars in 2024 ANCAP testing, including a 95 per cent adult-occupant result. The Jaecoo J5 EV has not been tested by ANCAP, so it has no rating at all, although Jaecoo says it is confident of five stars if and when it is assessed. Both cars fit seven airbags and a full active-safety suite of autonomous emergency braking, lane keeping, blind-spot monitoring and a driver-attention monitor. The equipment is comparable, but if a verified crash-test result is important to you, the Deepal is the only one here that can show one.

For a first-time EV buyer working to a budget, the Jaecoo J5 EV is the easier recommendation. It costs about $11,000 less, charges faster on DC power, and its eight-year, unlimited-kilometre warranty removes a lot of the risk of trying a newer brand. Its 402km range and compact size suit the daily commuting and occasional trips most buyers actually do. The Deepal S07 is the better choice if you can stretch the budget and want the bigger body, longer range and the reassurance of a five-star ANCAP rating. But on pure value and low-stress ownership, the Jaecoo leads.

The Jaecoo J5 EV has the stronger ownership package. Its warranty runs eight years with unlimited kilometres and it includes eight years of roadside assistance, where the Deepal S07 covers seven years and 160,000km with just one year of roadside. Both use the same 12-month or 20,000km service intervals. The Deepal does publish a five-year servicing estimate of about $1,804, and both brands are backed by established importers. Combined with its lower purchase price, the Jaecoo's longer cover makes it the cheaper car to run on the metrics we can measure today, though real running costs will depend on your electricity tariff.

For families the choice comes down to space versus value. The Deepal S07 is the bigger car, with more rear-seat room on its longer wheelbase, a 125-litre front boot and a 1,385-litre load bay with the seats down, plus the five-star ANCAP rating many parents want. The Jaecoo J5 EV counters with the larger seats-up boot at 480 litres, a compact body that is easier to park and manoeuvre, and a much lower price. If you regularly carry taller passengers or need the load flexibility, lean Deepal. For a smaller family focused on budget and easy running, the Jaecoo makes strong sense.

The Deepal S07 has the more lavish tech fit-out. It runs a 15.6-inch central touchscreen, a 12.3-inch driver display, a head-up display and a 14-speaker Sony sound system, and it adds a heated steering wheel. The Jaecoo J5 EV uses a 13.2-inch screen with an 8.88-inch cluster and an eight-speaker setup, but answers with a panoramic glass roof and powered sunshade, pet-friendly synthetic-leather seats and a keen price. Both offer wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, a 360-degree camera and wireless charging, and neither has built-in satellite navigation. For screen size and audio the Deepal wins; for value the Jaecoo holds its ground.
